Would you (and the Professor of Finance) blame someone like Mike Tyson for being, presumably, 10 times stronger than you are? Or would you blame Brad Pitt for being selected as one of the sexiest men on the planet (albeit subjectively) while neither of you, again presumably, would even come close to making that list? My point is simple, and in no way is it intended to offend anyone: as much as "public servants" self-servingly want the masses to believe that people were created equal, that is a total BS. There always will be rich and poor, strong and weak, handsome and ugly. So let the 17-year old drive his 50k car because he is what he is and don't compare him to yourself 20 or 30 years ago. It's a totally pointless waste of time.

P.S. I myself do not represent "rich kids" as I came to this country with $800 in my pocket, although I'm far from starving now.

As I said originally, I have nothing against the original poster having a 335, Porsche, Ferrari, or whatever. I have nothing against rich people (or poor people). I am not a fan of wealth redistribution. If you are wealthy and you can afford an expensive car, great.

If you have a 335, $1300, and like fast cars like I do , I think that the PROcede is an excellent thing to buy.

But the original poster was trying to RAISE $1300 and wanted to know what he should do with the money.

My point was simply this:

If you are 17, there are many more productive things that you could do with your money than spend it on a 335.

It is the "teach a man to fish..." thing. With some careful thought, planning, and education, anyone can become financially secure within just a few years.

You must understand, I am 38. I see people every semester that have, by their early 20s, already dug themselves into holes from which they may never recover. To me, that is a shame. Many of these kids were simply never given the knowledge necessary for them to succeed.

By succeed, I don't mean get a good job making good money. I mean having enough money coming in that you don't have to work, ever again. You go to work with a smile on your face because you like your job, not because you must do it to pay the mortgage.

In my opinion, buying $50,000 cars for your kids is a very poor way to teach them financial responsibility. It just teaches them to be consumers instead of investors. In the long run, investors win, hands down.

PS. I will happily drop this now and return to our regularly scheduled PROcede topic

I got my car went 2 months after I turn 19

I'm not rich or anything my grandma was the one that use her credit to get me the car . went I graduate my grandma told me "I would get you a new car" since my old car (Dodge Durango) the A/C was broken and it was giving me so many mechanical problems , it was almost a year after that I got, I sold truck Carmax gave me 4K for it and she gave me 2K and my parents gave me 2k.

I got my car, and I'm paying $500 every month for it (with my own money) , and my parents pay for the insurance

so you see guys you don't have to be rich to own a nice car, as a matter of fact I live in a townhouse and I don't have a tree full of money in my back yard.

however IrishFlush03 think about it, the 335 is pretty fast already. get a body kit or a set of wheels the softwares updates still pretty new so I'm sure other companies are going to come out with software updates at a competitive prices, so prices will eventually drop, hold on the update for 6 more months. for example the owner of Wolfcars a dealer of Revo that I see him once a weak went I go to the audi meets with my best friend is going to start developing a update for the e92, also dinan havent come out with one yet so just wait

with that money you can get:

-a set of wheels, and sell the OEM with the new tires so you have money for other mods

- get a spoiler

- H&R springs

- xenon fog and angel lights

-xenon int

- tints

- and last but not least a good radar detector

- and if you have money left get the pedals

however is your money, if you really want the software Pro cede e go head and get it you can go wrong neither way. however if you see their website http://www.vishnutuning.com/bmw_335i.htm they going to come out with a 380-400HP update

i would actually work on some rims and suspension. not trying to sound ricer, but the 335 hasnt been out that long and the procede hasnt had the time to proved reliable. i do agree it's the best bang for the buck, but there are still many companies out there working on engine/performance mods. Im going to work on the little exterior/handling mods until i feel the performance mods are reliable. but thats just my .02

The manual transmission apparently can handle the power easily.

There is currently some debate as to whether the automatic can handle the power. I, like many others and according to BMW parts, believe that the automatic is the 6HP19/21 which is only rated at 450nm (332 ft-lbs). If this is the correct transmission, then handling 405 ft-lbs may be pushing the transmission hard. Then again, ZF builds quality stuff, so that may be within their margin of safety, although 550nm is a fair bit higher than the rated 450nm (22%).

As to the rest of the drive train, I don't think that anyone has any idea yet. I suspect that the rest of the drive train will be fine. Once the PROcede start hitting the road in quantities we will hear

I am also curious about this because it was a problem with the S2000. They were widely regarded as having very weak rear diffs.

The great thing about our country: you are free to choose. That freedom is what makes some people rich, and keeps some people poor. It's your money, do what you want with it.

DrM has given good advice that should be given its own thread and posted as a sticky for all to read. That way, if people choose to read the advice and ignore it, at least they've been given the information to make a wise decision.

And no, I'm not saying that the rich kid shouldn't drive a nice car. And I'm not saying that it's stupid to spend money on things that make you happy. But - if you OWN NOTHING and HAVE NOTHING in the bank and don't have an inheritance and choose to purchase a $40k car, then you could potentially be making a decision that contributes to keeping you poor.

As for the rich kid with $1300 burning a hole in his pocket: buy a set of rims. You can then sell the OEM wheels and have a nice start on saving for that next mod (or you could open a 5% savings account and put that towards a down payment on your first rental property.)

Point taken. He can spend money however he likes. If I had it coming out my ears at 17 I'd spend it too. If I was 17 and "scraped" together $8K from family to buy a car, and figured through making $10/hr at Pizza Hut I could afford a $45K car with $500/mo payments (must be a lease?), then I would hope someone would me upside my head and tell me I'm making a bad decision. That was our point. Go for the ProCede!!!!

god why do threads ALWAYS turn out like this. if you're really that jealous of this guy then you're living a pretty pathetic life. and you're gonna say 'well if you would've read my post correctly...blah blah blah'. you're coming off as smug pricks being as condescendent as you are. he didn't ask you to diagnose his forseeable financial problems, he asked you what he should buy with $1,300...

obviously get the xede or whatever they call it now. and get some degree templates off ebay and put them on your wall in your room. then you'll have as many degrees as DrM
