Nice one Dave! On my recent trip to Oregon you could really see the smoke in the air from all the fires. We are in high danger here due to a rare lightning storm rolling across the state. I was going to try to shoot the moon last night but it was just too hazy.

Yeah Ed, it helped that my moon was about 30-degrees up when I shot, minmizing the haze. Near the horizon I couldn't have gotten a decent shot.

^^^Nice. My new (to me) 2012 C300 4Matic arrives tomorrow. I'll be BMW-less for the first time in 10 years.
Can't wait to get some pics up.

Lenny and Carls faces are so different, usually they have the same face type.

Agreed. Cool shot, Matt.
You could have some Photoshop fun with that blank screen, too.

Just saw this nest on the side of a farm road near a river in Amity Oregon. I was trying to be careful, but still spooked the Osprey, so I moved away slowly and hope I didn't disturb dinner too much.

Tried a full moon shot with the 400 5.6 and 1.4x TC. Very humid out there tonight, though. Lost some definition, I think.

Induro asked me to write a piece about shooting the moon and they put it their blog at: http://blog.indurogear.com/how-to-ph...ing-your-mind/ Perhaps I overplayed the need for a tripod, given my sponsor. I rarely use the tripod anymore if its a grab-shot. If I plan to shoot a series, then I'll set up the tripod to save my arms. Here's a grab-shot from last week, off my balcony, 1,000mm at 1/80-sec. hand held. Proving that the IS on the new Series II 500mm is simply amazing: Gibbous Waxing Moon by dcstep, on Flickr The dark areas are due to clouds on earth, causing me to slightly over expose the lower right quadrant. Pulled Shadows up, Highlights down, added a ton of Contrast and Micro-Contrast and that's it.

Great osprey shot Ed. I've been lazy this year and didn't travel up to Summit County to shoot osprey this year. You shame me.

As for combining photos, some cameras have a built in feature that does this automatically (the one I posted above in post #2738 being an example), whereas you can similarly take multiple shots on a tripod and combine them in photoshop (this is what I did in this image in post #2720). It amounts to the same thing really, just the latter takes more work Basically the reason I did it was to add a sense of the road being more busy than it really is by taking several cars' worth of light trails from each shot and combining into one shot with lots of light trails. Hope this answers the question... And the obligatory snapshot: Tiny Self-Portrait in X6M by ddk632, on Flickr |
