Composite shot of one starling(?) being tracked with a 5D MkIII through a 400mm 5.6 and 1.4x TC (Kenko). These are pretty heft crops merged into one image. So far I'm pretty impressed with the tracking of the 5D MkIII as well as the IQ with the 400 5.6 + 1.4x TC combo.

Not bad, but that does stretch the limits to the edge. Start saving for a long f/4 lens and an EF 2.0x TC-III.

Yeah, I've come to the realization that my main problem is distance. I'm always too far away for the equipment I have. Thing is, upgrading to a 500 f4 IS v.I and a body to handle it will still run into the $10k+ range. This is like the gap between the super rich and the upper middle class. It's a damn big chasm.

Well, I don't feel super rich, but I am blessed with being able to spend money on these types of things. (I don't have a boat, or a mountain cabin, among other things that might keep me from doing this). The good news is, I'll sell my Series I 500/f4L IS for $6,000, probably in the next six-months. Think of it as an investment. It'll probably still be worth just as much five-years from now. Dave

I just got back from shooting all afternoon after leaving early from work. Then I got home and realized I didn't check my camera after getting it back from Canon, and shot all afternoon in JPEG Of course if I always shot perfectly, this would be of no concern, but I like the cushion RAW provides me in shooting directly into the sun and other high contrast situations. Hopefully I will still get some good shots, but I am still so mad at myself! Moral, always check your camera settings! |

Starling taking off. Very fast birds. Hard to even get them in the VF. I kept my aim on this one until he decided to leave.

So this was with the 100-400 with a 1.4TC. Not the ideal setup, but I took off from work with what is in the van. If I had shot it in raw it would be a bit prettier, but this was still a fascinating drama to watch unfold., There were 5 or 6 red tails, just hovering in the thermals over this ridge, all looking down, I am assuming for a snack. Every once in a while, they would cross paths, and get a bit angry with each other. God how I wish the camera was set right, and I wish I had a prime, but I'm glad I at least got to watch!

Nice shot, Ed. We have Red Tails here, but they all hang out along the highway. I'm stuck shooting TVs.

Great shot of an ugly bird!
It's too bad, because I could shoot these all day from my back yard, we have tons of them here too. They are nature's janitors though! |
