I was very hesitant on taking car to dealership but I figured why not and...BOOM! TWO NEW TURBOS!!!!!!
Noob Question about tuning: Does anyone use the COBB tuning ACCESSPORT and wonder if the increased boost on Stage 1 caused the wastegate problem? I know once I get my car back everything will be back to stock and am kind of hesitant to re-tune it. Any input on this would be helpful. Thanks |

I just wanted to say thank you. After having my wastegates rattle for the last 8 months, I finally had some time to try this fix. It eliminated my rattle. I couldn't believe it. Thank you for sharing this fix with us. I adjusted the rod 1.5 turns.

my car rattles when i have the jb4 settings for menu 10 set to anything be 2krpm and 4k rpm . The jb4 is set to 4k rpm normally. when i set myn to 2k i can illuminate the rattle but i can't hit more than 16psi boost. when i set it to 4k rpm i can . Would tightening the rod have the same affect ?if so i don't want to mess with it.

Amen. Just did this to my newish (replaced 6k miles ago under 82k extended warranty) turbos. This is such a simple adjustment it should be mandatory for all dealerships to check and address each time one is in the shop. No excuse.
Didn't realize how much chatter my car was making until I gave the rod 2.5 turns and fire it up. Good lord almighty! It is like a totally different car. So pleasant. Shame on BMW for not addressing this. Totally ridiculous. BTW...Sears/Craftsmen has a little wrench kit that comes in a little vinyl pouch and it includes the 4mm wrench and the 10mm. It came with a larger wrench kit I got earlier this year. Perfect. Thank you, Mr. 5....you are a saint. |

Correct. I'd give it a couple turns. Mine took 2.5 turns to eliminate the noise completely. First attempt I did about 2 and still had some chatter on decel and as it leveled out to idle after some big rev's. Let it cool...cranked another half turn and pure gold, Jerry!!! GOLD!!!

For me, standing at the front of the car leaning over the engine (Im tall) with the actuator rod running the length of the car I rotated the actuator rod towards the fender/ground starting with the wrench from above pointing at the sky. 3~ turns and Im rattle free.

I did this Sunday whilst removing my downpipes, as I think you have to do it from underneath on RHD cars.
I bought a set of mini spanners from Amazon - Bergen branded ones, only a few quid. I could've sworn I read on here that a 4mm spanner was required, but in my set it was the 4.5mm that fit. The 4mm was too small. |

I have had my 2010 335ix for about a month now. I started to notice a small rattling sound especially on cold start. I thought something was loose with the exhaust - but as i am reading now I noted some people had issues with the exhaust flap maybe...??
When my car warms up though the noise (rattle) goes away... I have done the rev up and on decel the noise is so faint i can barely hear anything. Yesterday however, driving home on a very narrow road I was hearing a lot of rattle while accelerating. when I lifted my foot of the gas the sound would disappear. Again thinking something was loose. but when the car got warmer the sound completely disappeared. At this point I am not sure what it is. whether it is the wastegate or exhaust flap or both. I don't have any codes yet but having had the car for about a month now with only 43k miles this is a bit concerning to me. Ps. i have not added any warranty yet. since there is a recall on the wastegates can this still be covered without warranty on the vehicle? Last edited by gspinin; 09-16-2014 at 10:25 PM.. |

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum but have been reading for a couple years. I am having a problem with my 07 335i. The problem started with loud wastegate chatter and getting the 30FF code any time i tried to floor the car. I did the rear actuator rod adjustment with 1.5 turns which resolved my 30FF code which was very nice, but i still had very loud WG chatter on cold start and as the car decelerated. I turned the rod in another 2 turns which did not help the cold start noise, but did take care of the deceleration noise. I thought all was well but the other day getting on the freeway i had the car in D mode and got the "half engine" light for the first time since doing the first adjustment. My question is after 3.5 turns on the rear rod should I keep adjusting or start looking for boost leaks?

If you've got a Cobb AP we can help greatly minimize your wastegate rattle. We've thrown this feature of our protunes into custom tuned maps for many of our customers with great success.

That's definitely something to keep in mind. As of the moment I'm still trying to decide if I want to go with a JB4 or use the cobb AP, but right now my main concern is identifying if the actuator rod adjustment is correcting my 30ff issue or just masking another problem. I'm thinking it may be my vacuum pump because on cold starts my brake pedal is rock hard.

I have a Cobb AP. What exactly do you do to help the rattle? I only seem to have it at start up, and you can only really hear it with aftermarket DPs.

I also rotated my rear wastegate rod to 3.5 turns now. Although most of the rattle is gone but I still hear a little if I hold the pedal around 2-3k rpm. ITs much more noticeable accelerating after cruising at 2-3k rpm. Do I continue to tighten more or how can I tell if the sound is coming from the front or rear wastegate?
