Those look like BC Herons but I've never seen so many in one spot. Luckily you got out alive, seen "The Birds" lately?
You could also try Hwy 160/ first 5 miles of 12. Egrets, geese, ducks, hawks and GBH's.

Another Broncos Sky by dcstep, on Flickr This is my 7D at ISO 3200, two full stops higher than it really likes to go. I did the Raw conversion in DxO Optics Pro 9.1 with their new PRIME NR engaged and I really like the results. If I were going to make a 48" print, then I'd up the NR a little more, but this looks good as is at full-screen size. Click on the image and go to Flickr if you'd like to see larger sizes. You can still see a bit of luminance, but chrominance is pretty well gone. The PRIME process takes five to ten-minutes per image to run because of the way that the algorithm works, but it really does work well and give the 7D another stop or two of effective range.

I'm still going through about 2,000 pics from Sunday. Hopefully I have some better shots of the mystery bird.
Dave, great shots as always. Way to wring out the 7D for all it's worth! Life at the marsh, Sacramento NWR by lennycarl08, on Flickr |

Yeah, but they're way bigger than that here. The one in your picture is tiny compared to mine and Ed's look even smaller. Maybe it's the perspective. Here's two of mine:

Mine was a city bird. Chicago River.
Bought a 5D MkIII today. Amazon had them for $2699. Couldn't resist. Now I need to sell the 6D.

Now you have f8 autofocus on your own camera, not just the school's. Speaking of which, this was shot with my 5D3, 100-400 + 1.4 at 500mm. After reading up on it, these are in fact a whole bunch of black- crowned night herons. They were doing exactly what the Cornell site said they do during the day. Herons by lennycarl08, on Flickr |

Wow, you did find the mother load. I didn't think they did that as I have only seen individuals.

At least you got to see an owl, Ed. I hear them all the time and one swooped over my head in the dark a couple of years ago, but otherwise we don't see them here much.

I see a bunch of the Herons in Hawaii for whatever reason so no reason to try for Colusa.
Mark, Whatever you do, don't trade the 6D in. I nearly died when you did that with the 70-300.

I may have a buyer already for it. One of the photogs I work with is interested. I can't see keeping the 6D, 7D, and 5D MkIII. The 7D and 5D MkIII make a more useful combo than the 6D and 5D MkIII, so the 6D will have to go.

Agreed, a good combo and I hope to do the same but there are too many toys on the list in the way.

I love my 5D3/7D combo. The 5D3 is the travel, big gun and all 'round camera and the 7D is the second shooter when I've got the Canon cannon mounted on the 5D3.

J/k congrats on the 5DIII. One day I will decide not to GAF about $7k and just get a 1Dx ( most likely it will be the successor to the 1Dx ), but I'll keep the 6D. |
