Again using the big Tammy with the 7D, this is a 150mm shot from the wedding lawn at the Ahwahnee, shooting up to the left side of Royal Arches. Two climbers are actually rappelling down from the top here, about 1000 feet above the valley floor. During a normal year, that waterfall to the left would still be flowing strong at this time of year.

So astro photography is not my thing. Not that I don't like it, but I have no idea what I am doing. Still, with some pizza, beer, and a couple of cameras and tripods, my friends and I gave it a try from the hotel balcony. This the the MK III using the 16-35L

For a pizza loaded drunk attempt, you got a satellite! I think I've only gotten one and neither pizza nor beer was on the menu.
It's very pretty up there. I always try for night sky shots when over 4,000 feet.

Very nice, but guess you can crank the ISO more to get even brighter/more stars.

I tried a few with a higher ISO, but then the trees ended up being overexposed from the hotel lighting. Ideally I will try sometime from one of the meadows in the park or even Glacier Point, far away from unnatural light sources. This was more of a just for fun shoot.

This weekend is supposed to be good for meteorites. Might have to get out there tonight and try some shots.

So probably to everyone's relief, I'm on to working on the shots from the last day of my Yosemite trip
I caught sight of this tree seemingly growing right out of the rocks on this waterfall. This is known either as Quaking Aspen Falls or just Tioga Pass Falls, and is usually dry by August, but more like late June this year. Quaking Aspen Falls_HDR by lennycarl08, on Flickr |

Canon 5D MkIII with 400mm f5.6 + 1.4x TCIII
Makes a decent macro even though I was 15ft away.

I had my 500+1.4 combo on the 1DIV last night while having the first BBQ of the season in my back yard. I was hoping for some hawks, but spotted this little guy across the yard from me on one of my idle planter boxes. A close cousin to the sierra fence lizard I got in Yosemite, this is the more standard and very common western fence lizard

Never seen a fence lizard. Plenty of lounge lizards, though.
Nice shot, Ed.

After the sun went down last night, I decided to finish off the wine and stay out back and enjoy the first evening of the summer season. Of course there is way more light pollution here than in Yosemite, but it was a nice clear evening, soI brought the tripod out back and enjoyed some Floyd on the stereo, some Napa sangiovese, and tethered the 5DIII to my macbook.
