The guys I spoke with at one of our supporting aftermarket parts sites suggest the afe now.
I can get it brand new for $260 shipped as well. |

WITHOUT A TUNE, the intakes don't do squat, but make maybe a little more sound IMO, if your not running a tune, an intake is worthless. End of my rant

I just picked up the Simota Intake exactly the same as Gruppe M but for 1/3 of the price and the Simota filters are sturdier than the K&N which Gruppe M uses and its a DRY filter..havent put it in yet but here is a couple of pics off another car showing how it looks in the engine bay.
My problem was that the open intakes suck hot air rite in from the engine..hot air is obviously less dense than cold air..so a closed intake was the way to go for me..Honestly I dont think any intake is gonna vary in substantial power for the N54..sound is a diff story..the stock airbox def creates vacuum so it has to go especially if ur running a tune..but like i said drawing cold air from outside was the way I wanted to go..and it looks awesome (all that carbon fiber)...LOL The airfilter is also much bigger than stock but def not as big as the Injen or AFE for that matter..we'll see how it does I know a few guys who ran the simota and they were happy..I just had to do something or than stock cause I am running intercooler, downpipes and exhaust so to ignore the intake would have been foolish..check out Simota. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

AFE with scoops i think is the way to go ive had good results using it. Really any intake, remember that the intake pipes are very thin and small. Any intake over stock will be good

About Injen:
Just installed my Injen last week, and here is what I can say in a nutshell:
1. Slightly improved throttle response, sharper, quicker 2. Definitely improved low-midrange pull ( butt dyno), so I believe that the +10 hp claim is just about right... and my DSC light is going nuts.. ![]() 3. No change in intake sound at all... ![]() 4. Very easy to install, the installation instructions are kinda stupid but anyone with basic mechanical skills can install it easy... I did it in about an hour... 5. Made of high-quality material and parts Final Verdict: Well worth the money...

The car needs to be driven anywhere from 200-400 miles before it has fully adapted with the new intake. Many people install their intakes and go straight to dyno their cars without first allowing the car to go through this learning period.
All the pictures and Advertisements you guys are seeing from the InJen products are actually from my E92 335i. Don't get me wrong, the InJen DCI is a great intake and I've had it in my car for over a year now and I do love the sound. However, I do believe that there are some design issues that could be remedied and aFe's intake does just that. There are two design aspects on InJen's DCI that I would have liked to see: * InJen's DCI is exposed in the engine bay without a heat shield * InJen's DCI does not retain the use of BOTH the air snorkels and only uses one which allows for less air-flow These are the two main concerns I have with InJen's DCI and aFe fixes both of them. If your looking for a product that has a heatshield to prevent hot air from going into your cones and is easy to install with having to relocate various parts in the engine bay with good solid gains I would definitely recommend the AFE Dual Cone intake! Intakes don't do anything below 14 psi and only result in higher IATs. I showed this. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=491005

yes, this topic has been utterly beaten to death... but this thread in particular seems to sway towards "looks", which boggles the mind. IMO, all of them should work the same and potential buyers should swing to the unit which omits the most hot air from the engine bay while allowing MORE air into the MAF. The aFe design (at least for the n55), which has gone through more testing than the injen by far, has done BOTH. The injen unit looks to be fast-tracked to market, while the aFe was designed last year and only now came to market. New oil, new filter element, totally new design with a functional heat shield and dyno proven gain. YES, a tune is needed to fully utilize the CAI, without it... i think the gains will be less than marketed. The thing is, people need to weigh more emphasis on the design and engineering aspect rather than looks. Again, in my opinion, the aFe looks functional and great, and way less "ricey" than the injen. I've heard references to Sti many times... why go with a known rice design? whatever.......... aFe gets my vote - clearly.

I've been searching this topic for months. I was close to buying a dinan, afe, and injen, but ultimately decided to just buy a BMS DCI. Its cheap enough where if I feel like its not doing its job I can move on without much loss selling it used.
I really couldn't see the difference with the searching I did. My car will have a AMS IC, AR catless dp's, vanguard exhaust, DCI, and GIAC st 2 installed next week. With the higher boost of stg 2, I had to get a intake and I saw no benefit for investing in a CAI. If your not running a higher boost tune and other mods like the ones I listed above, I wouldn't even buy a intake. Unless you just want the sound it provides. my .02

Been running dci for a while
I just upgraded to injen. I did a ton of reading and the evolution raceworks race team uses the injen. This is a track car and not a drag car. Throttle response is crucial in the attack car and that helped me confirm my gut feeling. It's short, has a huge snorkel, and no restriction. If u have an fmic upgrade, temps are less important than flow. (2) 3inch cones set away from the hottest point of the motor. They are in the coolest spot under the hood ( not including the brake duct compartment). My car is much more fun with the injen than it was with dci. I say, grab one used for 250 and you have a sound investment. New at 450, the start with a dci. Ets has one coming out that looks promising!

i could be wrong but this appears to be a very old thread and the user seems to have been banned at some point in the past.
