Good movie, although I can nitpick quite a bit.
The first fight between Batman and Bane was underwhelming, and their second was anti-climactic. And seeing how Batman overcame Bane the second time, it makes less sense that their first encounter went south for Batman. It was an entertaining movie, though. |

Incredible movie, but it'll be impossible for any Batman villain to top Heath Ledger as the Joker

It is by far the best movie I've seen all time, surpassing The Dark Knight and the first two Matrix movies.
I really love how Batman is not your regular invincible super hero. Although he got crushed physically and mentally by Bane, his failure and rise continue the theme from the first movie: "Why do we fall?" The whole prison scene was just brilliant, I do not find it anti-climatic at all. "What does the chant mean?" "Rise." |

I just bought the book, "The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy."
Very good book, a highly recommended one for those who love the trilogy as much as I do. Nolan is a genius, and his focus on the tiny detail is rarely seen from directors. For example, questions such as "Why does the scarecrow wear a mask?" and "Why are batman's ears so long?" bothered him greatly. So he had to come up with reasons for those. In case you forgot, the scarecrow mask acted as a gas mask and batman's ears are antennas. These were not detailed in the comics or in any of the previous films. |

Preface: If you haven't seen the movie, don't read this (or really, why would you come into a "Dark Knight Rises Discussion Thread" if you haven't seen it?)
The good: The trilogy was closest to the comics, while maintaining a relative sense of realism. Batman's skill above all others comes from his training. Bane's training, physical size, and pain-killer mask made him the ultimate anti-Batman (which was also true to the comics). They also touched on a concept that we all must face one day - Age catches up to you. Batman is an invincible symbol portrayed by a mortal man. Their use of technology to stretch the man beyond his physical limitations and age was an incredible addition to the storyline that make it, in my opinion, one of the best superhero trilogies to date. The trilogy itself is about the redemption of the common person. The city represents the struggle every person faces between good and evil. The villains represent the worst in us, and Batman represents the good and incorruptible, trying to keep us on the path of good. Batman's personal struggle against these villians represents that feeling all of us get when we do something wrong. His triumph represents that pride we get when we exercise morality and do the right thing. The bad: From the standpoint of a movie, it was rather anti-climatic as said before. The only real encounters between Bane and Batman were mild, slow, and almost predictable. The action was very predictable, and there were few times Batman actually used the skills he was taught. Most of the movie, he's a brawler throwing out backhands. Only while he and Catwoman are heading towards the trap in the sewer does he actually seem like a world-class ninja and not a back-hand boxer on PayPerView. Anne Hathaway was a decent cast for Catwoman but incorporating her into this movie seemed forced to me. Granted, they only wanted to do three movies and wanted to fit as many characters into it as possible (and in that, I think they did very well). Only very-late comic villains didn't make it, and I don't mind that. I do think they should've introduced her much earlier, if she was going to be what she was to Batman. Her redemption in the end was just as important as Batman's struggle to maintain morality despite the adversity if she was to be Bruce Wayne's partner. In conclusion: The series itself is the best comic book adaptation to date, with respect to realism. Nobody was invincible, it stayed surprisingly true to the comics, and there was a lot of depth to the story that was woven into all three that your typical comic book adaptations don't have. While this movie's ending didn't feel as conclusive as I felt it should, it was still a fantastic trilogy that didn't lend itself to trying to impress the people with cinematography at the expense of depth. I give the whole series a 8.5/10. Telling the entire Batman Saga in 3 movies is hard, but I think they pulled it off brilliantly overall. The only possible improvement on the next incarnation of Batman would be a greater sense of awe and wonder. The end of two, with Gordon giving the speech about Batman not being what the city wants, but what it needs, leaves you with a sense of pride and awe for Batman and his selflessness. At the end of Rises, you don't get that as much. You feel like they're about to tell Robin's story and you know they aren't. Is he the 'new' Batman? Is he to be Batman's sidekick? For the conclusion of a trilogy, I felt like I had a lot of questions still. |

Some say it's a pain reliever from his past spinal injuries, the comics say it was 'Venom' that made him faster and stronger.

Didn't the movie say that the mask kept pressure on his face or the pain would be unbearable? I could have sworn they said it, and that was the reason for the mask.

I felt the conclusion was pretty explicit and clear cut. The movie doesn't need to explain Blake's story. This entire trilogy was about Bruce Wayne's transformation to Batman. After this entire ordeal, we finally get the sense that Bruce Wayne can FINALLY be himself without identifying himself as Batman (Alfred's wish from the start). He finally gets to retire and move on with this life. He wanted to find a person to take over the job of guarding Gotham (originally Dent from TDK) after creating the "symbol" he set out to create in the first place (Batman Begins), and he gets to do that with Blake. Nolan did a great job combining all the recurrent themes from the first two movies extremely well. Now, the movie itself had a great story line, but the execution wasn't as great as I had hoped. There were too many things going on (Selina Kyle, Bane, Talia, League of Shadows). In fact, this movie would've been a lot better had it been split into two movies. There would be more opportunities for better story development. That being said, I think all of the actors/actresses did a fantastic job with the character development within the small time frame that they had. Favorite character of the movie? Alfred. Michael Caine only had about 10 minutes of acting in the film yet his portrayal of Alfred had more of an effect than any other character in the series. Fuckin onions. Gary Oldman comes in a very close second. Flashback with the boy and the coat. Overall great Batman movie; certainly not the best of the trilogy, but I'm satisfied with TDKR as an ending.
