Where's the second?

It's amazing what 1000m elevation will do.

This is why I "need" a 500! This is a pretty heavy crop from my 1D with the 100-400 of a great horned owl in its nest. That stupid twig is in the way of a really decent shot, but still, it was really cool just to see one in person. This was shot at the Merced NWR in the central valley of California last month.

It's a Tamron 90mm macro.

There was a pretty big kerfuffle with a couple of other geese. I'm guessing it was about lady geese!

A typical problem with owls is branches in the way. This actually a pretty open shot. Nice shot.

A 500mm solves lots of problems.

If you've got a tripod, this is a situation where you can MF and use a 2X TC. Use LiveView and 10X maginification to get perfect focus and take lots of shots.

My backyard this afternoon, I was waiting for some hawks to fly by, but started watching all the bees around my hibiscus.

I'm still consulting experts trying to confirm what this beautiful bird of prey might be. People are telling me that it's a dark morph red tail hawk, but I'm still not convinced that it's not a ferruginous or swainson's:

Great shot, Dave. Almost looks like you used a fill flash with the nice lighting and the catch light.

Good luck. I am terrible at identifying hawks, so I won't even try! Cool looking bird regardless though. The hard core bird types at POTN would probably offer their opinions.

The sun was still low and it tipped it's wings toward the sun as it banked in a turn.

Love it when things work out like that. In my short tenure as a bird photographer, I've learned to wait for just that. A couple of my eagle shots were saved thanks to the bird cooperating.

I take many, many shots of animals, hoping they'll turn to the light, catch an eye light, put their wings up, put their wings down, etc. This bird was over me a minute or so and I took 60-shots, kept two and this was the best of the two.
