but I mean it's possible to rig a "chirper" to go off when u lock the car for MUCH cheaper...the actual alarm is worthless for reasons mentined above

Alarm
The alarm install is easier than easy, it took me 35 min. in my driveway. The dealer charged 1 hr ($98 for what has to be a 5 min. job). to install software. The value to me is letting me know if someone messes with the car in my driveway possibly before any damage is done. BMW makes sure the dealer can pick up a few hundred additional bucks by selling the car in kit form.

stummer if someone did a DIY with pics and made it self explanatory it would be a different story.....a lot of us cant decide if its worth attempting on our own because we dont know the kind of "skills" it requires....

I paid the $400 to get it installed. It's just for my piece of mind. I sleep better at night. (even though the car is locked in my garage)...
