Clogging up wasn't what I said, but rather that just a little dirt will hurt the efficiency of the coils more than just a little. Why make it worse just to save a few dollars on the filter?

Sure the outside air has trash, but I know that foam insulation like the OP suggested will degrade to black dandruff that I really don't want in my car, ... or inside my AC/Heater cores.
