Yes, you can do it. Yes, it may cause issues with warranty. Yes, you can likely avoid those issues by simply removing the tune before taking the car in for any service or warranty work.

Is it a pain in the ass to remove and then re-install the chip every time you go in for service?

I was running a tune, dps, exhaust, intake, suspension, and was leased. Find a SA that you like, become friend with him, and remove the chip for any remapping/updates they have to do or turn it off for any warranty work (brakes etc.).

I tuned mine when I had the 08 and it wasnt bad. Never had issues when I took it in for service. Just dont break any clips and please remove it when you go in for service.

For what it's worth, I tuned my lease, which I chose to purchase once the lease ended. Soon, I'll get a N20 328i, which will be a lease that I'll tune right away ![]() |

Sara - did you just throw it into stock bypass when dropping off?
I assume that when you do things like warranty oil change and other simple warranty work, that they don't go looking for things irrelevant to the service being performed...just check for error codes maybe? |

If I were you I'd get a used Cobb Accessport off the market section here, it's very very easy plug and play kit. Plug it in, it saves your stock map, then you load a pre-loaded stage 1 or whatever map, run it, have fun. Then before service plug the AP back in and uninstall the tune and put stock map back on+clear all faults.
^IMHO best way to do it. Also they make what is called OpenSource Tablet, which I plan on picking up. |

For the record the term chip is not really relevant on this platform any longer.
It's a piggy back tune or a flash tune. JB4 and PROcede are Piggyback tunes. Flash Tune: CObb, Giac, Open Flash Tablet. Chips were soldered on daughter-boards or chips onto factory ECU. Flash tunes are generally easier to install. Piggyback tunes generally have more features, bells and whistles. I'm not going to dive into the hardcore tuning details at this juncture. If you have any questions as a first time buyer hit me up for more information and goals with the vehicle. |
