Another aDDition to the family, the 335d

Hello from Canada! Just wanted to share my excitement on another diesel purchase and registering to this forum. Well, our VW TDI GSW and Subaru STi just a got a new mature friend in the garage, the mighty BMW 335d. Its a 2009 but only with 7,800 kms, a rare find indeed, it was owned by an older gentleman and parked in a heated garage, covered every winter and not driven much, hence the low mileage, its basically brand new without a single flaw on the interior/exterior. The moment I test drove it, I knew I was gonna buy it or shoot myself. The 425 lbs/ft is intoxicating to say the least, and I am coming from dyno tuned WRX STi. I've done my research, and I know these things are not exactly bulletproof and have a good share of issues mostly related to emission controls (all emission recalls were completed under warranty in 2013). I am willing to leave with it, as the moment they start failing, I am going the alphabet delete route. I live in Calgary, AB, home to the Unobtanium Welding who have done a few DPF, SCR deletes on the 335d and X5 35d, also there is dealer in Calgary for Ecotune here as well who can tune out those alphabets. Looking forward to chating with you guys and hopefully, I can contribute a bit to this forum once I get know the vehicle a bit better.

Welcome Ruso! That is lowest miles I've seen especially on a 2009. You should have little if any carbon contaminant. Best of luck. Wow, only 4631 miles.

Congrats, that is crazy low mileage! However, if the oil is from 2013, I would replace that immediately. I would check/replace other fluids (coolant/brake/urea) as well.

Thanks fellas! It also got every single option checked off for 2009 model year. I've only had it for a few days, but the more I drive the more I enjoy it. Its got the STi reflexes and power, but way more comfortable and way better on fuel.

Thanks for the heads up! Will set up an appointment in the near future, I don't think I am ready yet to work on this baby on my own.

The urea might have gone bad and there is a potential for it to trigger an SES light.

I believe the active tank holds 1.6 gallons and the passive tank holds 4.5 gallons.

Welcome Ruso!
Urea draining is super easy. Just remove the panel behind rear left tire. There are two nipples (one for active and one for passive tank).
Look on my alphabet delete thread for pictures:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...+delete&page=3

And here is the official guide on how to do it. Don't need the special tool for refill. Just buy a bottle that has the proper screw in and push connector.

Open the nipples and then go make some coffee. and drink the coffee. And fold your laundry. It takes a while -- maybe an hour (?) if near full.

Make sure to have the dealer check for software updates. This should be done even if you are going the alphabet delete route in the near future

Great info!!! Thanks!!! I will let the dealer do the first drain and fill along with the oil change and brake flush. Then will will be doing my own oil changes and DEF. By the way, where are you guys sourcing your DEF??? the manual specifically says BMW DEF only, not sure if that's actually the case.

I have got mine from Walmart
http://www.walmart.com/ip/BLUEDEF-Di...5-gal/16933407

And it will not fit like that, you have to buy at least one bottle of original one, open the neck and fill bottle from this and then dump into car.

Great, looks like both Walmart and Canadian Tire carry DEF (API certified and meets ISO 22241 specifications) in Canada in 10L jugs (2.5G) at reasonable price $20CAD. Good to know that 335d is not picky towards DEF. I've heard that some new Jeep Grand Cherokees diesels will nor register anything but Mopar DEF, basically it will show empty tank even though its full.

Interesting how they would check what kind of DEF it is?
I have heard people buying def on truck stops as well.

BMW as i know will take any def, it will inject it, and based on NOX sensors will make decision if it is working or not, this done to avoid people just put water in there.

no clue, man, but here is one review for DEF sold at Canadian Tire:

Quote:
February 26, 2015
" I used this product on my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel which requires DEF. Unfortunately whilst the product probably does the job, the dash display which shows the % capacity did not register the fact I had just put the fluid in. As the Jeep has a sensor which eventually prevents the engine from starting if sufficient DEF isn't present, I went to my local Jeep dealer and bought the Mopar DEF. This immediately registered on the dash display. I cannot explain this but unfortunately I won't be able to use the Air 1 "
perhaps, there is a reset procedure that dealer knows about and has nothing to do with the censors
