Updating TCU

How difficult is this? The Telematics Control Unit, not the Transmission Control Module.

I'm getting random SOS malfunction errors once a month or so...as far I can tell there's nothing wrong with the unit, so my only guess is that it needs the updated software. It's the original software from 2006.

How long does it take to update this module? Is it safe to do it without an external power supply? What are the dangers involved in doing it that way....if there were to be an interruption, would it only damage the TCU or is there a risk of damaging other modules?

Do you have an active BMW Assist subscription?

If not, the Assist portion of the TCU often fails and causes the SOS errors.

You can try adding +TELD to the VO and defaulting the car. This will disable BMW Assist but leave Bluetooth active.

If defaulting the entire car fails (it often does), at the very least default CCC/CIC/RAD, TCU, and Kombi.

You MUST use a profile with manipulation turned off to default the modules. Coding a blank .man is incorrect and will not work to default modules according to the VO/FA string.

I don't have an Assist subscription, as far as I know. I bought the car about a year ago, it's possible but unlikely that the previous owner still had a subscription. I checked the menu on the radio and it seemed to think it was active, but I used the option on the radio to cancel it hoping that it might prevent the errors. That didn't seem to help.

When you say it fails, do you mean the hardware actually fails? If so, defaulting the car will prevent the errors even though there's a hardware problem?

I read every thread about SOS errors I could find and I didn't find anything about disabling Assist. I'll give it a try, thank you!

EDIT: For what it's worth, the error I get is A554 (Alive Phone). Happens about once a month...bluetooth and assist will be disabled on the radio menu, and it the error will stay as long as the car is on. Typically if I just turn it off and wait a minute or two it won't come back.

Not sure what it exactly disables, software or hardware or both. But I had issues with my TCU in 2010 and added +TELD to my VO and I never got an error since.

I added the TELD option and Assist seems to be disabled. I only got the error every so often so I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it ever comes back, but everything looks good so far. Thank you!

matteblue3er , I haven't gotten any SOS errors since doing this, so it looks like it worked. However when I scan the car I now have a constant error from MOSTGW. It didn't give me the code, but the description is Zentrale Registry stimmt nicht mit der Sollkonfiguration ueberein (Error_Registry_New).

Did you have any problems with this? Any ideas on what to do...is there another module I need to default, maybe?
