There is a cop infront, looks at my car, makes a U-Turn and pulls me over..

Reason he told me he pulled me over was because of "No license plates". Then he told me to get out of the vehicle for a DUI check..of course, i passed it again.. let me off again...

All the fun happened at 3-4am.

point is, sometimes cops can pull you over for these "minor" things to try see if your drunk, high, naked..whatever...
i agree with you and it's one of the reasons i continue to run my front plate.

yea, be careful in downtown sj. there's a ton of cops and it's not only sjpd, but sjsu pd as well.

i was in downtown sj for nye too and was really glad and lucky i did not have to drive.

I was at a restaurant in SF, had my car parked at a street metered parking. When I got back, I had a ticket on the windshielf for no front plate! WTF - damn cop was walking around and ticketed me while I was parked? The fine was $100, no option for a fix-it. I paid it online - I wouldn't have put the plate on anyway.

Cool

It's different here in Orange County. 90% of the higher end vehicles you see on the road have no front plate, and it seems the police don't care (probably because they would have to pull over almost everyone, lol).

has anyone tried the method of putting on the back plate only, but keeping the dealer temp sticker on that's on the front of the window in the corner? I know a couple people on these forums have had luck doing that. Anyone else?

might work if you're coming up behind him, but how would that work if the cop sees the rear plate?

yeah that's my concern. i mean if the cop is on the opposite side coming towards me and sees the front dealer sticker, how likely is it that the cop will look in his side mirror AFTER we pass each other. and even if he does look and sees my rear plate, how likely would he bust a U turn to get me.

But in your case, you're wondering if I pulled up behind him and he saw the dealer sticker on the window. If i were to pass him up, and he noticed my back plate, then the chance would be greater that he'd pull me over since we're going in the same direction. I guess just to be safe I'll probably put on both plates. haha

I don't run any plates at all... It's just 2 fix-it tickets instead of 1 if you just have no front plate. I decided that having none is less conspicuous and I have my dealer sticker on the window.

Before people jump on it, I can use my temp registration for 6 months before having to put my plates on, and I'm not there yet. Although at that time, I'm not gonna say I'll put them on either...

Years ago I ran my car without any plates for several years without issue, fix-it tickets here and there but I got them signed off and just paid the admin fee.

ahh so you can wait 6 months before you legally have to put the plates on? i always wondered what the time period was. i've had my car for about 2 months, so i guess i can leave em off for another 4 months assuming you are correct

I'm nearly certain it's 6 months on temporary registration, but don't quote me on it. A new-ish car with dealer sticker, most cops won't give you a hard time. If you pull out an insurance card for that car that's over a year old they'll probably give you some grief, but it should only be a fix-it regardless.

What are you going to do if your car is stolen? Although it's most likely on a boat to somewhere by then anyways as opposed to someone simply taking a Bimmer for a joyride.

I will never run plates on my car. I have the dealer sticker on the front windshield and that is it.

No plates, front or back, EVER.

Few cars are recovered nowadays anyway, and of those which are, most of them are through GPS / visual recoveries and confirmed by owners. The first thing to go on a stolen vehicle is the license plates anyway. Using the car's GPS is a much better way to recover a car, if even possible.

Anyone had a no front plate ticket (VC 5200) in SF?

I put on a plate and have it signed but don't know how much fee I need to sent to the court.

$10.00?

no its $30 and they can't ticket you for tinted windows when you're not there...

cops came to my school and ticketed everyone who was parked illegally and also gave them tickets for front plates as well (i was parked legally so i didnt have any trouble with no front plates OR tint )

Was the VC 5200 citation (no front plate) issued by a SFPD?

can't make it to the court in person, so I called the traffic court and even SFPD Non Emergency #, to find out the fee amount, no one ever picks up!

Should be noted on the ticket or in the packet they send you? I can't remember if they send you something if it's just for an equipment violation.
