I give up!
Used Ista to try and diagnose the no start problem
Had battery charger on to keep battery up.
Came up with 18 trouble codes.
Mistake was putting the windows all down.
Priority came up with FRN module which controls windows
Was going thru the procedures when a nasty storm arrived.
Powered down the program but could not get the windows back up!!!
Had to put plastic around all windows and fortunately storm passed with little rain.
Tried program again, now showed low voltage as main priority
Got a new battery, replaced under warranty and started again.
Now can't read frn module to find out what I didn't do to the windows!,
Is there any BMW guru that is in the South Florida area that could help me?

There are a couple sharp guys in the coding forum that can remote-in and possibly help you with the computer issues. Try pm'ing bimmergeeks or top gear solutions. Can't help with the SFL mechanic--sorry and good luck.

Hello Fellows,

Lurker and poster and DYIer,
Last year while working on the SCR tank, had issues when trying to restart the car. During crank the whole electrical system goes haywire..lights flash...etc... FRM module then went dead..had DDE relay code and FRM codes....door locks and trunk were INOP..any CAN based items.....however if jump started then car starts..and works ok....for 1 or 2 cycles....

Also read, that the FRM counts faults, if over 50 fault cycles..like a delete, etc..the FRM software/firmware has bug...

Battery was getting old which then probably killed FRM,..at same time I was getting a DDE relay code..and 3 glowplug codes....think from the voltage spikes the glowplug controller went south..

The FRM module there is a 10yr 120K extended wrtty, but when the dealer installs the FRM they update other modules like DDE, which may wipe out your tune..There is a way to revive/recode the FRM...mine was acting up randomly....new batt..new FRM...new glowplug controller and all is well 15K miles later... Any FRM codes? If you put new FRM on your own you can get reimbursed at bww-rp,com, VIN dependent...but the new FRM has to be coded and its firmware level has to match the other modules..or other modules are updated to match...so almost best by dealer..

Just some ideas, I'd say 30% chance of being FRM, but FRM and battery do some weird things,

Get a volt meter, and read your voltage when testing. The ista doesn't always report real voltage, so you don't know if the charger can keep up. With low voltage, some modules shut down due to the battery monitor which can shut down "extras" to help preserve the battery.

If you don't want to buy a heavy duty charger, you can piggy back 2 in parallel.
Just connect one at a time to the terminals. For black, neg, ground you can use any shiny exposed metallic area to clamp on. Positive is trickier because you only have one at the engine bay and one by the battery to champ onto. Car battery chargers set in "manual" mode usually put out more current too but watch the voltage with a meter. You should be between 13 and 15 to be safe

..also to add to my prior post...
seems car is sensitive to how and when is battery is disconnected...seems car how 'goes to sleep' after some time after IGN OFF; then OK to disconnect battery then connectors.

When I was doing work on the SCR, I disconnected connectors and/or battery....but possibly not the exact sequence needed....when all work was complete and I reconnected everything.....FRM module went haywire..and car would not start...flicker of lights and no crank as if low voltage..and many CAN errors..many from the FRM..also was locked of the trunk and windows did not work..but luckily by jumping from engine bay was able to open trunk... also when charging battery I figured best to charge it by itself - battery is isolated from car - not connected to car - even the smart CAN module on the + post.

Just another data point,

The FRM resurrection thread.

You always want to make sure you have a decent power supply hooked up. I bought a used HP server power supply for $30 and it puts out 12.8V at 70A. Also, when working with ISTA or other programs you want to make sure that you do not have any light errors or bulb out warnings. Apparently that has a contributory effect to FRM firmware bugs and their failures. There are people that can reflash your FRM and recode it back to your car.

First and foremost, Bimmergeeks rock!
Spent 2 plus hours going thru the car electronics.
Have a dead FRM module first and a dde that has an issue, possibly an internal ground issue.
Will contact AA Rodriquez tomorrow to see what can be done

FRM you can probably ly get warrantied through the dealership. My car has a reimbursement active for the FRM.

After further analysis, it was the dde that was the issue.
AA Rodriquez was fantastic and took care of the issue and Bimmergeeks programmed the new footwell module.
Both were outstanding!!!!
Thanks to all who helped.
