I was wondering if the intake swap is a fairly straightforward DIY job or if it's best left to a shop? |

I've been looking into a DIY. Here's what i found. I haven't done this yet but here's a what i found. You need to attatch your motors to the new intake first. Then you need to remove the airbox. Also it looks like you need remove the hoseclamp from throttle and the undo all the bolts and the connectors to the sensors. Try to remove the intake with the throttle and sensors still attatched. Then move the sensors to the new intake manifold. You also need to replace the gaskets. Re attatch all the sensors and connectors and attach the actuator connectors (not sure which one goes to which motor). That should be it? Easier said than done! Haha! I just took a glance in the engine bay to figure it out but I'm sure it's more complicated. I'm also having a mechanic do the install. Parts will arrive next week. Don't worry, the suspence is killing me too!

I'd cross-reference the part numbers. There's a pretty good chance that the manifold is still the same, or almost the same. The 328 still uses the same cylinder head, which would mean the intake ports should have the same bolt pattern. Check the intake manifold gasket part numbers too. Even if the IM is slightly different, it could still fit. EDIT: I just checked for you guys. The part numbers are the same, the E90 330i, X3 3.0si, and the Z4 3.0si all have the same intake manifold. So that should open up a lot more options for people trying to track one down. |

Not quite. Monday or Tuesday hopefuly. For those who were wondering, it's about 2.5hrs of labor to install the intake. BMW reccomends you run their intake and valve cleaner too especially for high-mileage cars.

Yes but definitely difficult. Limited workspace and bolts in a very soft engine block. I'd rather have a pro do it instead crossthreading a bolt into the block. Also you have to manually thread the plastic of the intake manifold. If you mess any of that up... Yikes.

Well, I just checked with the parts dept and they're still waiting for one of the screws. The bad news is it's in Germany. The really bad news is the fact that that screw is completely custom (5x66mm) so you can't pick it up at a hardware store.

Just get some bolts or screws and cut them to length. I had to cut 5mm off of my extended wheel bolts because they were hitting the emergency brake.

$1440 so far. It will be about $250 for installation I think. All in all not bad for 60hp gain in a BMW. I'll probably get it on the dyno. Too bad I didn't dyno it befor I got the software. There is a possibility though of restoring the original software for a dyno run then reapplying the performance software. Don't hold your breath though. I could just find someone with a stock 325i and use that as a baseline.
The parts departament was able to obtain a screw for me so I don't have to wait for the one in Germany. Hopefully I'll be taking the car in on Monday or Tuesday. Slowly but surely we'll get there.
