My point is that their response doesnt explain how when the windows are up but smashed in the corner; how the beam (which should at this point be wider) doesnt pick up on a hand sticking through the window. Last edited by TripleBlack; 10-17-2012 at 12:07 PM.. |

From PH today:
"I posted back in April on this subject. My car (M3 Saloon), had been broken into by smashing the driver’s window and all they had done was access the diagnostic port. I was aware of the issue with BMWs so as a deterrent I bought a disklok. This morning I woke up to find my car gone and the disklok at the side of the road looking like it had been opened with a can opener! I guess I am lucky as 4 hours later it was recovered by the police. The Met police are aware of the problem and are seeing a lot of cars stolen. Despite what BMW say the Met tell me this is not an issue with other manufacturers. If you are considering buying a BMW I would recommend you think again unless you have very secure overnight parking. BMW don't care about this they fobbed me off back in April and they will just do the same again. Fortunately my car was recovered so quickly it will not even go down as a claim (so I am told by my insurer). Anyway, be warned. As for me that's it the car is going at the earliest opportunity so if anyone fancies a 58 reg BMW M3 with 25k miles you can have it (at the right price of course! ;-)"

So I complained to BMW UK about feedback other owners had been providing on forums noting that pre 2007 cars were being stolen in the same manner.... given the feedback they gave me, reporting that pre 2007 models were unaffected. Today I received a phone call from BMW regarding my recent communications. ... I'd been pretty much been sending every link of people reporting their pre 2007 suspected as being stolen using this method... they wanted my details so that my dealer can contact my to arrange the "fix" once available... funny how they can now supply a fix ey?

I emailed BMW yesterday saying that it has been 8 weeks since I was told that an update will be made available "within 8 weeks", and I still have not heard anything.
Anyway, got a reply back saying that they are "finalising all the information" and sending it to their dealerships, and that I should hear something from my dealer within the next 7 days to get it booked in. Not to sure if that same timescale applies to E90/91/92/93 though.

A lot of the E9x drivers I know (including myself) have all seen good reductions in their insurance premium over the last couple of years. That's experienced drivers with maximum NCB that you wouldn't expect to see big drops. The fact the insurance companies aren't in the slightest concerned highlights how small a problem the thefts are. I find BMWs one of the cheapest performance cars to insure. A few high profile cases made this into a far bigger deal than it was in my opinion. A lot of people are of the opinion that the update did little or nothing. |
