do e46 and other older bmw that did not use run flat tires use rubber or foam shock mounts?

I am wondering is it the shock mounts that bmw softened when they say they designed the suspension to use rft tires?

E36 used much harder rubber mounts, but design is very different.

Standard RunFlats mean Shocks, springs, suspension bushings, subfram bushings and some mounts all have to be designed accordingly. It wasn't just one part they softened to accommodate the stiff tires. The suspension system, as a whole, needs to be designed with RFTs in mind.

I had Bilstein sports installed in the back and was wondering why the rears were so floaty. I got these and all is good. Very inexpensive no-brainer, even if you don't upgrade the shocks. Thanks OP

Going to give these a try. Rockauto had them for around 20$ shipped for the pair, easier than going into a store for me. Hopefully they'll go nicely with the BC coilovers I just ordered. I think I'll only end up needing to top bushing but for that price I'm not too worried if the rest of the kit is unused.

I installed these yesterday. It went well. I didn't even removed the wheels. My car was at the dealer for about 3 weeks last month for turbos replacement. At the same time the battery cable recall was done. It was brought to my attention that I have water coming in from the right upper shock mount. Sure enough, the stock foamy mount had collapsed. I guess it it could not cope with the stiffer yellow Koni's set at 3/4 to firm. I'm partially to blame because I didn't replaced the OEM mounts 2y ago when I changed the shocks. The nut was fully fasten but the shaft was spinning freely. It was that bad. Now is rock solid. The shocks function as designed. For about $25 shipped to my door not bad deal at all.

I bought the rubber shock mounts from monroe but have not put them on yet. Also now considering the whiteline subframe bushing inserts (KDT918). For those that did these mods, looking for recommendations, would you do them together or separate, which one first?

Its all about time if you diy. Doing the mounts are quite easy. The inserts are a little more involved. I have never done the inserts but from reading up here they require quite a bit less effort than full bushing replacements.

Since you have the mounts I would slap them on!

And doing them in stages makes it much more interesting to be able to see the effects of the mods.

If you are paying might as well do them all at once.

yea diy... wish i would have known about the mounts when I diy'd my rear bilsteins! Will probably do it all together save on getting the car in the air and the wheels off twice.

Thanks for sharing OP. I was just about to order the Dinan mounts and ran across the thread revival. Just in time to refresh of the top mounts and install rear shock boots.

The two jobs are almost entirely unrelated, except for jacking up the rear. You don't have to completely remove the shocks to do the upper mounts, just the top. And the Whitelines you need to drop the subframe just enough to slip the top half of the inserts in. So you don't need to detach the top of the shocks though I would advise disconnecting the bottoms.

I've done both myself, shock mounts are easy, Whitelines are also easy but time consuming. Maybe 30 min shock mounts incl removing trunk carpet etc. and 1-2 hrs for the inserts assuming all tools jacks etc. are present. I did rear M3 sway bar and bushings same time as inserts and that took far more time, huge PITA.

There is a good DIY floating around here somewhere for the Whiteline or Pflex (same idea) inserts.

thanks - yea the only commonalities I was thinking was jacking up the rear, getting it on stands and taking off the rear wheels. In my experience getting the wheels off sometimes is a pain in the ass. My rims like to stick to the damn hubs.

I'll be replacing OEM M Sport shocks for the Bilstein B12 kit so I am looking into refreshing the bushings and mounts, too. Is the Turner kit enough or is there anything else I should do? E91 M Sport, 65k miles on bad roads.

I guess the Monroe kit is the equivalent to rear upper-bottom shock mounts, 33506771738.

it will be difficult to impossible to do so without lifting the car and removing the wheels. you need to let the suspension sag so you can compress the shock. without lifting the car the shock is already partially compressed.

You just need to raise the rear end. You don't need to completely lift it nor remove the wheels. I certainly didn't. Took me about an hour for both and most of the time went on removing and putting back on the trunk liner.

With the car completely lifted the suspension would drop and the shock wouldn't line up with the shock mount opening. Then you will have to load the suspension. Honestly, is just more work.

Well I for one get very nervous jacking up a car and working on it without it being on jack stands. Which means wheels off the ground for my set up, and then might as well take off the wheels for more room.

You are right about the shock rod not wanting to go into the opening at full droop, so I just jacked up that corner's susp. to get it back in. Doesn't really take any more time but it is safer.
