On RealOEM.COM they list "RETROFIT KIT FOR ACCESSORY CONTROL MENU ACM" for the 2006 E90 as Part Number 65500418002. This is for vehicles with the navigation system.
The following EBA (options installation manuals) apply: EBA 0418005, EBA 0420167 |

Based on the manual, it's clear that I am out of luck (for now) regarding the E90 LCI model. The ACM retrofit kit plugs into the iDrive controller, which is significantly changed for the E90 LCI 2009 models. That alone rules out the existing kit for me. I'm not sure if the entire ACM architecture will change with the new iDrive system, too..... |

I'm not neccessarily trying to hijack this thread back to the original subject (as I do enjoy the ACM talk). But personally I am really only interested in putting in a "REVERSING CAMERA RETROFIT KIT" into a US E90 LCI with the full iDrive/Navigation.
Is the ACM required to do the BMW reversing camera retrofit kit? Also, where could I find the installation manuals for the REVERSING CAMERA RETROFIT KIT (which could probably answer most of my questions)? Thanks again! |

That's all I care about. The new A5/S5 has a backup camera that just rocks.

The E60 camera installations are not the same as the E90. There is a E90 backup camera as well as a surround camera. I have a hardcopy of the instructions and will scan it in on Monday at the office.
The surround camera (consisting of 2 cameras in 1 package) is about $2000 so its too expensive for my taste. Also on the E90 it does not seem possible to have the video track overlay like on the E60. Anyway I will be installing the ACM on my car over the weekend and will let you know how it works. The installation is actually very very simple. YOu have to tap into the CAN bus, the Audio and the Video. All the other connectors are for your convenience - not to be connected. An added advantage is obviously that power is sorted out properly. I have 2 install manuals for ACM. Level 1 and Level 2. 65 50 0 418 002 Retrofit BMW Accessory Menu ACM - L1 65 50 0 422 701 Retrofit BMW Accessory Menu ACM - L1 65 50 0 431 544 Retrofit BMW Accessory Menu ACM - L1 65 50 0 441 372 Retrofit BMW Accessory Menu ACM - L2 ONLY level 2 (L2) supports the USB module. I paid $700 for my unit from the BMW spares department. They had no in stock and ordered the unit from Germany. It was here a week later. They have to put in a bit more effort to get it for you so if you SA is lazy they would say sorry. Go to another SA. The E90 backup camera seems to mount where the current license plate light is and actually includes the license plate light next to the camera. You need the ACM to have the camera. Added advantage is a generic CAN-RS232 interface, so if you want a CARPC you have CAN input/output already.

Please if you can document your install with pictures here that would be awesome. Quote:

I wonder how the E90 Rearview Camera functions in conjunction with the PDC.... Does anyone have installation instructions for the E90 Rearview Camera retrofit kit? |

Thanks for clarifying the different acm modules and the one that supports USB devices.
Since the acm requires aux audio for some features, I wonder if it's also compatible with 6FL? |

There are a couple of cheaper interfaces available. I think the cheapest is about $400. I paid equivalent of $670 for the original BMW parts. Reason is that I want to build a CARPC and need the CAN-RS232 interface that comes with the ACM.
Yes, you need the full kit if you only want a backup camera

I am planning to build the video overlay using the steering angle such as on the E60 myself. Probably going to use the AVR for that: http://dzl.dk/projects/electronics/osd/osd.html
Ive scanned in the instructions for the E90 camera retrofit. Will load it later. Quote:

Yes, it is compatible with 6FL, but you have to remove the USB device if you select DVD, otherwise it will override the sound.
However this is better than 6FL, because you can witch movies and view photos from your USB harddrive/USB flash memory - so I am not sure who still wants 6FL!

The cheaper options are not BMW parts, but are being accepted by some BMW S.A. Some have some features that are better, but I like the BMW ACM better.
Your choice in the end. Remember that few parts in the car are true BMW parts anyway. Most parts are contracted to Delphi, Bosch, Nokia or other firms. Sometimes these firms also offer after-market products that are similar or better than the BMW part. It is still better not to think about it and just by BMW labeled parts. At least they endorse it.

ACM installed - finally
OK it appeared to be straight forward and less than 2 hours to install. If you've done it 100 times before it will take 2 hours.
Anyway it took me about 8 hours. I tried to get as close as original installation as possible. I routed all wires, cables, etc just like BMW would have in the factory. That took a lot of time. The installation manual covers almost everything. THe pictures of how to remove the panels are elsewhere on this site - so no need to repeat that. HERE ARE THE LESSONS LEARNT IN ADDITION: 1. You have to remove the cup holders to get the glovebox frame out before getting to the fuse box or JBE. 2. You have to remove ALL 4 srews from the JBE, not the 2 that are mentioned in the installation manual. 3. Be careful when you put the connector back into the JBE. Hold the fuses with your other hand so they dont push out as you push the connector in. 4. The ground terminal probably has paint on. Remove the paint otherwise the cables may not ground well. 5. You have to remove the back of the centre console to lift it up to route the cables properly. 6. Before you mount the to controller boxes below the steering wheel make sure it is high enough so you can fit the foot panel cover back. 7. Be VERY CAREFUL with the optical fibre cabling in the car that goes to the CCC and the one that goes to the breakout box on the passenger footwell cover. 8. The instructions for the LVDS cable is actually incorrect (for RHD at least) This is correct: Remove the LVDS cable that is currently between the CCC and CID. Now connect the long cable that came in the kit between the CID and the ACM. Connect the existing cable between the CCC and the ACM. This way the colours and indexes and cable lengths works out perfectly and you dont have to cut off the indexes. 9. Remember to route a video cable and power cable in addition to the supplied cables to the back of the car for the reversing camera input. Otherwise the reversing camera in put is still at the front. 10. Route the rear cable connector A10 past the rear seat into the trunk. The cable is long enough and that's where you are going to put your equipment anyway. The instructions says install this first. Rather install it last. 11. I also did something stupid like not reading the instructions for the setup menu well. It says right 1 times and left 3 times then push down to get into the menu. Left is pushing the controller left and NOT rotating left. 12. Remove pins 2 & 19 from connector A1 and isolate first. Also I cannot see why at all the US cars would work differently. The unit does not require coding and it's interface with the CCC is totally transparent. The only messaging between the ACM and CCC is to select the AUX audio input.
