The air being ingested is still filtered by the k&n in stock location.. The volume below the filter is small and the snorkel is not sufficient, so the cut allows more air to be drawn in.. The Dinan increases the filtered surface area by adding a snorkel and filter to the already filtered area of the airbox..

I've done a bit of research over the past year on N54 intakes and never seen this method of a hogged out stock airbox before. Anyone else have success with this ?

Seems like the cover is a significant restriction point as mentioned here.

I have an extra airbox and plan to do a Mr5 when I have some time before I pull the trigger on turbos.

Lol. I now see what you've done there. The hole is drawing hot air next to the intake side of the engine.

Air flow vacuum is still being restricted by the crevice between the filter housing partition and the cover. All your doing is adding hot air making things worse

On the E89 Z4 BMW made a "taller" cover to allow more airflow through the crevice as they knew where the restriction was

General N54 vs E89 Z4 Intake box cover

vs the E89 Z4

It probably does. It's more of a hood clearance issue.

Yes, the box is "identically" the same making the covers interchangeable

Hmm, the lid doesn't seem to be available as a separate piece though. It's the whole intake assembly or nothing.

Removing the cover bypasses all of this, so everyone would think ok time for a DCI.

So I decided to seal up an aFe Stage 2 Elite CAI, which is now superseded by the aFe Magnum GT (100% sealed), that has better airflow, and I ran before and after dyno results. I gained 13 whp and 17 wtq more over the factory box with a K&N drop in filter. To make it even more interesting I went back to the dyno with unfavorable weather conditions

Stock Turbos like colder air.
What intake(s) are the best in your opinion? I'm in the market for an intake but not sure which direction to go.

Found a few Z4 35is air boxes on car-part.com and they range from $135 to $275. Not sure if it would be worth buying not knowing if it would actually add any value without a dyno testing.

Not worth it............

What I would do is this: Remove the filter partition

This will open up the area to fit a dual flange filter. You just need to fabricate your own connection piping
