taking it out is same as the E60
but the led on the 3er is on the main board so it is much easy to mod.
also soldering the led is same as the e60 but on the 3er there are 12 leds and not 8
before I said 10 but that's wrong sorry about that

Omg that is some deeeeeep modding right there. Our MDX has this color combo and it is better on the eye than the BMW amber by far but not enough to go this deep into the mod.

How is it better?

Amber and red are the easiest colors on the eye at night. Ever notice how submarines have red interior lights?

White is probably the worst color.

http://van.physics.illinois.edu/qa/listing.php?id=669

"...submarines use red interior lights for the same reason as airport control towers (at night), planetariums, and some movie theaters. The reason is that it’s easier for your eyes to adjust from red light to dark than from white light to dark. If you’re going to try looking out the window of a submarine, you’ll want your night vision totally in gear!"

100% agree Amber and red are the easiest colors on the eye at night
But most modern cars now days are white interior lights

Nice work! I DEFINITELY want to do this mod.

It doesn’t look too difficult. I’ve taken apart the cluster before on the E46 and the process seems to be relatively the same. Obviously, I’ve only done this for swapping out the gauge face and painting the needles red. I haven’t even thought about tackling the LEDs since I have NO idea how to solder the new LEDS to the board.

I have a few questions though. Is there any painting involved (other than the needles)? In a few of the pictures it looks like some parts were spray painted white. Was there any reason or was that for something else?

Also, can the car accept a DIFFERENT set of cluster set (from another car)? I wouldn’t want to ruin my own, but if I can find a spare, I’d rather work on the spare and swap it out with my original set when it comes to sell the car.

Thanks, and again, the mod looks great! If I can get the soldering down I may want to do this eventually.

Exactly what I would love to do too. Maybe if we swap it out we could get a new tachometer as well, one that goes up to 340km/h. Oh wait... that would need recalibrating or something.

I was amazed at how i LIKED this. I was expecting to find it ricey.

the White looks really good, but as its been said, the Red's so much better for your night vision

Cool to see this being done though

there is some painting for the 2 rings. right 1 is for the oil level and left 1 is cruise control.
these need to be painted in white. I would use spray paint and not brush to get the smooth affect and get matt white paint.
No you can not just change the cluster. they need to be reprogrammed.
best thing to do is get a 2nd hand 1 from the srap yard and test it on that then do it to your real 1.
have fun and good luck

the white looks much better! Too bad the mod is so much work...

with all those people using the "night vision" argument, it makes no difference, stop being so stupid. Its a car, not a fighter jet or submarine.
