Long long ago, in a world far, far away (Evo), Shiv posted a dyno showing 76 being the best gas.

Maybe he'll remember and comment....

I've read quite a lot about toptier and I think it's more marketing than anything else. As a previous poster stated, the gas itself is not different, it's the additives. With our direct injection, and the fuel going directly into the cylinder, not the ports, the detergents aren't doing any cleaning of the intake valves, ports, etc. That's why direct injection engines (across the board including Porsche, BMW, Audi, etc) experience carbon buildup in the intake tract. There is no constant flow of gas over these areas to keep them clean. I still think it's a good idea to use the best gas available as those additives do have benefits to other parts of the fuel delivery system, but I wouldn't worry about filling up somewhere else if a toptier brand isn't readily available. Also, in regards to BP, their Amoco Ultimate premium meets all toptier standards, so that's just as good. Toptier required all grades to have certain levels and at the time BP tested, their regular didn't meet those requirements. They've since upped the additive package in all their gas and I don't believe ever pursued toptier certification. I believe I read this was also the case with several other brands, that their premium meets the toptier specs, but I'm not 100% on which brands. So really, I think if you stick with using a good brand of premium, you should have no concerns. I' use primarily Sunoco 93 with occasional Shell V Power 93 in my MINI JCW and 335i and have full confidence the fuel will never be an issue.

+1.

Even use of the "best" gas isn't going to help keep the valves clean. Choice of oil, frequency with which you change it, and an oil catch can are far more important with a direct injection motor.

I always use Shell and Chevron whenever they are available. Usually they are cheaper in my area too (besides walmart). Ive actually noticed Chevron is generally cheaper than shell so thats what i target if you will.

Chevron - gas and diesel.

Years back Brumos Porsche specifically recommended Chevron to me because of their gas additive package. I've used it ever since.

I also agree with the comments regarding top tier gas - generally they are all good, it's just a matter of personal preference and experience.

My car Autotunes 0.5 psi higher on 76 than Chevron (CA 91 Octane). I haven't compared 76 to Shell though.

shell 93 for me, mainly because its right next to the house. I have used samsclub 93 and did a comparison with autotune and they were almost identical in tune levels.
