Hey guys thanks for all the input. Installing my new ets charge pipe today so while I'm at it going to take a good look at her and see if I can isolate the rattle noise.

Anything? Took a video of my car yesterday and sounds exactly like yours in video #1 with that rattle-ish noise. The car does seem to make some weird noises at idle, but could be normal, however the rattle doesn't seem right. I hope to get my car into BMW this week for something else and will show the SA what I'm talking about with the noise. Will mention wastegate or pulley, as that seems to be the consensus on the potential problem. Car really does run well, however, but I do get occasional surging or pulsing when in DS mode. Hard to duplicate or pinpoint that one, and had dealer investigate that as well, with no luck.

Mine makes a similar rattle -- sounds like a heat shield is rattling actually. Had to take it to the dealer several times to figure it out. Turns out it's actually the transmission, somewhere around the bell housing. The dealer took it up with BMW NA and it got escalated to the manufacturer. The head of ZF North America is actually coming down to listen to my transmission this Thursday to determine if this is a manufacturing defect. I'll update after I get my car back.

I have a 2011 335i AT.

Not sure if this coincides with what I found today.. As I replaced my stock charge pipe with an ets pipe I found a lot of oil in the charge pipe. Ive read that its normal but i cannot i see this much being normal at only 19k Miles

ZF and a rep from BMW looked at the car and deemed the rattling noise coming from the transmission to be "within normal parameters." bah.

I don't think I have any further recourse for getting this problem fixed now.

^ As some others - I have the EXACT same noise, in the EXACT same place and it also appears on cold starts - especially cold days and disappears completely once driven just down the road and warmed up just ever so slightly (ie, it doesn't take a long trip to get it to stop - just down the road 1-2miles and it's gone).

I've got Charge pipes, down pipe, the works and it was making this sound BEFORE I took it to the tuning shop and it's still making it - so I'm ignoring until someone tells me to panic. I had no performance issues prior to taking her to the shop - nor after, but the sound remains the same and acts exactly the same.

Please keep us updated!

Thanks Guys!

I got the same problem I think, right after cold starts when I start to drive and downshift to first gear coming to a stop during decelaration, it's a really loud rattling sound. Going to call the dealer tomorrow..

Not trying to scare you but when my charge pipe was replaced there was oil in the stock charge pipe also. A couple weeks later the dealership told me I had an oil filter gasket housing leak. I would not ignore that.

Its been a while since I started this thread and haven't had any mechanical issues with my xi. Also I changed my charge pipe a while back and I too found traces of oil. I was also told this is normal for the N55. I'm taking my bimmer to have the vanos bolts replaced so we'll see if they find anything else.
BTW I've been using jb4 with 6.5g of e85 and topping it off with 91octane. Again haven't had any major problems.

Yeah not a concern at this point. In fact I'm dropping her off Thur to have the vanos bolts changed out along with a routine check up

I brought my car in a month ago for this noise and the dealer told me it was normal. They brought another 2 cars with the same n55 engine and put them all side by side so that they can prove it to me. All 3 had the same noise. My performance isn't affected by it so I'm not really worried about it

There is a difference between a common problem and normal. My car does not make any rattling noises, '11 335Xi with 62k on it. Very likely it is just a heat shield or something that has not expanded from the heat to create clearance for itself.

I had a rattling noise coming from my engine bay (louder than yours), and when I would turn the wheel at idle I could feel some rumbling like when you have a flat tire. The "flat tire" feel would go away once I picked up the speed.

Took it to the dealer and they said the power steering pump gave out. Found this bizarre considering this was a lot more common on the E46. Good thing I had warranty because the price was about ~1,200!!
