This was the only base I really touched on with Jim last night. I went over to check out his E90 ///M goodness and we spent most of the time playing around in it. I was actually in his office with him when he was posting last night.

3 words...

You are protected.

Jim has this figured out, and it is SOO simple.

Basically, it boils down to this. Sharkedit will ONLY read stock flashes or Sharkedit flashes that have been uploaded with the READ PERMISSION checked. If you have a Dinan flash or any other flash, it WILL detect it and only allow you to SAVE IT. The file will NOT be viewable in Sharkedit, and it will be encrypted so it cannot be edited elsewhere. So no copying tables manually and sharing it.

His logic is, why do you need to read the ecu other than to get the stock flash? If you have flashed it, you have the file on your computer. You will be able to read the flash if you have checked the READ box before uploading it.

So people interested in being tuners with Sharkedit. You can create maps for the customer and flash their ECU. They wont be able to read the map or edit it unless you give them permission to.

I can go much more in depth with this.

Also, we talked about the "visibility" of the SharkInjector/SharkEdit to BMW. I don't believe he is going to come out and say it is invisible to BMW, because he feels it is morally wrong to mod your car to the point of exploding then have BMW foot the bill. However, if I ever get an N54 powered car I will have no worries using a SI or SE.

Would this still allow someone to essentially provide another person with a "copy" of ,say, the dinan flash?

No, because the downloaded flash will be LOCKED to the ecu it came from via the VIN and one other thing.

So it will be useless to anyone but the person who retrieved it out of their DME.

if is like Jim said, it gets only read, write or a combination of both to the car's VIN. think of it as being an operating system's user account and file level permission as the same.

Malek, sounds like you are back on the trail. LOL. I am with you. The piggy solution is a bandaid solution. Basically you have two external forces working against each other, hence the reason I went full standalone when I knew you back in my IS300 days. Editing the tables in the ecu offers an unbelievable amount of customization and should eliminate the issues that still arise where the DME tries to combat your piggy. I am very interested in where this ultimately goes.

I asked Shiv the very same question in another thread..! He said he would have to wait and see, before he started writing or selling Sharkedit tunes/files. He suggested he still focused on his hardware approach and wanted to further support his product.

Personally, I don't think he's absorbed what bomb, Conforti just dropped on the BMW community.

Shiv knows exactly what's going on. He's been in numerous markets where something similar has occurred.

Shiv has been around for a while and has seen the same type of thing happen in all sorts of different markets. He knows exactly what's going on.

From the looks of it this SE will cost...

199 for the bluetooth or USB interface
299 for the SE
100 for the software plugin
100 - 300 for the flashpak

So anywhere from 698 - 898

Plus the cost of whatever maps we want to get on there.....

AW, I just posted what you wrote. The price is not even remotely ground breaking. Kind of frusterating. I think this will end up costing more than things on the market like the Attache and we don't know if BMW will be able to detect the flash. Those prices seem crazy high when you don't even get a map!

I think the shark edit is more aimed at tuners then end users. For the end users there is the SharkInjectors or buying the maps/install from a tuner.

EDIT : This was meant for boostedIS

Are you for real? Serious?

So, for less than the cost of any Procede you get full customization of the maps in the ecu... yet it costs too much?

C'mon now. Take a step back and think about this for a second. If you JUST want a map, wait until reputable tuners get ahold of SharkEdit. Then you can goto them and have your car flashed for a nominal price. Then you have a good tune, and you don't have to worry about a thing.

Or, you can buy a piggyback and watch as hilarity ensues when the masses get 29.2 on their MSD80s.

So is the Shark Injector going to be available to us at the same time the Shark Edit comes out? Does the Shark Injector just allow you to load the flash where the Shark Edit allows you to edit a the tables?

I guess you are right, but what if you have no tuner to load the map locally? Second, how would you return to your original maps?

I can answer that.

No it will not be out when SharkEdit comes out.

Jim is only a single man, so once SharkEdit comes out he will be spending time filling in the blanks on the documentation until it covers every possible thing. We need to clone him or something.

Did you read the FAQ? It covers this EXACT scenario.

If you have a remote vehicle you wish to read or flash load, you will
need to use one of our specially modified Shark Injectors. This allows
you to provide a tuned file to a customer across the state or on the
other side of the planet.

smd,
Thanks for all the info so far. I do have a question that wasnt fully covered in the FAQ. I believe it stated that you will be able to modify just about everything in the ecu... but would it be possible to see what everything is? Are there any screenshots of the software available yet? An example for instance... when the car is at a certain temp the ecu will run the water pump more. Is it possible to say set this so the water pump runs more all the time or at least at a different temp?

Also will all the functions in the ecu already be mapped out or will we have to do some mapping for ourselves?

Mat
