I guess the only other question is: Are the bolt-on ring gear and welded ring gear otherwise identical, meaning they will both mate fine to the same drive pinion? Or does the pinion need to be swapped as well?

I talked to the guys at Wavetrac about the DIY route. They say that it requires about $200 in parts and the rest is all labor time. Also, if you have a local shop do the work for you, there is no longer a warranty on the diff. That is because they can't warranty machine work that wasn't done in their facility.
