I tracked my car for the first time this weekend. It was my first HPDE event. my car is an xi MT without the oil cooler. ran ok yesterday, but as I pushed the car this morning I found limp mode 3/4 through 1st session of the day. Second session it went to limp on warm up lap. it was 69 degrees. You simply cannot track the car w/o the oil cooler. Forget suspension upgrades or tunes, my first purchase is oil cooler.

BTW- the car was very competitive when it was running. The DTC was helpful and the AWD really helped the cornering.

Well you could short shift at 4500 or so then a take an easy to cool down then do a real hard lap. I know it was your first event but learn how to manage the car you have. I'm not trying to work you on this.

With that I must say you couldn't have said it any better, "Forget suspension upgrades or tunes, my first purchase is oil cooler". Look into the AR Designs cooler.

Here is mod list in order of priority if you're tracking the car:
  1. Learn how to drive
  2. Secondary oil cooler. This assumes you already have the factory unit
  3. Track wheels and tires
  4. Suspension
  5. Power

This is Steve.
Yes, it was painful and I still miss it but it was the right time and I drove it 180,000 miles--not a bad run. I couldn't keep it, the M3 and the 335i (well I would have but I am married).

The M3 is fun and I am still learning what it can do as I haven't been able to get to the track as much.

Hope things are well.

I do wish the 335 came with a real differential. Annoying and the new "is" still has an open diff unless I am missing something. I don't plan on tracking it anyway so any $$ I would spend on an LSD would likely go into the M3.

I tracked my car this weekend at Summit Point Raceway. My car is a 335i 6-speed, sport package with no mods whatsoever. The car never over heated but I noticed brake fade during my second session. Also, the Bridgestone RFT's absolutley SUCK as far as summer performance tires go. In fact one my tires blew because it got too hot. Overall the car did ok, my old RSX Type-S for some reason felt better on that track.
