Any more news mate?

I've received an offical response form BMW also.

Quote:
Thank you for your email dated September 21, 2012 and for the information I requested. I am sorry to learn of your concerns, regarding the security of your BMW 3 Series. I acknowledge you are worried after watching a BBC report and reading information on the Internet.

We are aware that criminal activity is becoming increasingly sophisticated. However, in terms of security, your vehicle was built to a standard that meets the criteria required to comply with all required legislations. I would like to take this opportunity to assure you that there is no manufacturing defect with your vehicle; at the time of it being built, this particular kind of crime did not exist. However, as BMW takes security very seriously, we are always updating and enhancing software.

I appreciate that, having read forums on the Internet, you are concerned that your vehicle is at risk. I can advise you that we are not aware of vehicles produced prior to March 2007, being affected by the type of vehicle crime which has been highlighted in the media. Although the Internet can be a useful tool, it does not always give a reliable representation of a possible situation. I can confirm that vehicles built prior to March 2007, have a different type of security system installed in the vehicle and cannot be stolen by the particular method, referred to in the BBC report.

No vehicle manufacturer can ever guarantee against criminal activity, however, I trust that I have provided some reassurance for you in regards to your vehicle. We would recommend servicing your car at authorised dealerships on a regular basis, for the opportunity to further enhance existing theft protection.

Once again, thank you for contacting BMW UK. I trust that information clarifies our position on this matter.

Yours sincerely

BMW UK

So basically the security WAS good enough, but their still working on counter attacking 'newer' attacks, oh and pre 2007 are still not affected, but do go to your local dealers for a service, because an oil change will benefit your security

Send them a link to this thread.

Big companies annoy me, especially when they slag off internet forums as giving "misleading information" - i think they are forgetting that just 2 weeks ago they were denying that there was any problem with BMW cars other than the X5 and X6!!!

Morons.

Its something to do with the CAN BUS systems I'd read, pre 2007 being different, don't know that it actually does make a difference though.

Didn't BMW's built after March 2007 swap from K-line to D-Can? (not that I really know what this means or the implications for key cloning!)

Maybe because of the type of readers being used?

From 03/2007 until early 2010 BMW built all cars with a D-CAN electronics bus.

This requires a special OBD2 cable/reader which (unlike earlier K line cables), has a microchip built into the OBD2 connecting block.

It does not make much difference.
Example is OP's car which is taken.

Yet, BMW is insisting that only cars after march 2007 are affected.

Just to be clear, the obd theft affects ALL push button start BMW vehicles up to late 2011. I believe the first push button start beemers came out late 05/early o6.

My E90's a very early production model (March 2005 infact, registered June 2005), and has push button start, should I be worried? I'm sure that when I call BMW about the security update they'll refuse as its a 2005, despite still being an E90.
