I never travel without the 24-105. It's my workhorse. We're only doing 3 nights out of Port Canaveral in FL. Nassua, Cocoa Cay (private island), and back. There won't be much to shoot with a long lens. I'm thinking of a light kit for Nassua (SL1, 18-35A) and maybe the 55-250STM just in case I need something long (it's quite portable). Plus my 6D for low light and on-board shooting. Might bring my travel tripod for a group pic (going with family).

Agreed. The kestrel shot is superb.

Unless I know I'll be shooting wildlife, I leave the crop-sensor home. Is the 55-250mm an EF? That and the 24-105mm would cover 99.9% of what you might possibly do.

Nassua has interesting sights and the beaches on those private islands can be striking with the Caribbean water.

I took that same cruise in 2011. Here's Coco Cay from that cruise (I'd add an EV if I were to process it today):

The 55-250STM is EF-S, so the crop is needed. Plus the SL1 is very light. Although, I forgot that I just picked up a G7x, so I may just go with that for Nassua and skip the SL1 and lenses. Maybe just the 6D/24-105 and G7x.

Well, yeah, the G7x has a large sensor and built-in, fast zoom, over that sweet range for walk-about. That could be interesting. I'm looking forward to the results. The lack of a VF is a bit off-putting for me. I feel like a dork when holding a camera out in front of me.

Looking at the DPReview test images and comparing to the 6D, 5D3 and, particularly, the 5DsR, you DO give up quite a bit of detail sharpness. I think I'd rather carry a large camera with a 24-105mm. You just never know when you might want a 72" print!! Of course, my pack-mule physique allows more bulk than many will want to put up with.

What an amazing set of images from you guys over the last couple of days !
Love your fishing shot Ed - great mono processing.

Dave the detail on your hovering kestrel is just fabulous.

And C5 your classic tree is perfect, and obviously suits your décor superbly.

All this talk of holidays and what gear to take causes me no end of problems !

We're going to Madeira in 3 weeks for some winter sun and hiking the Levada trails.
I'd love to take some big cameras and big lenses, but as usual these days, I'll settle for taking just my Canon G1X, tripod, flash and plenty of batteries and cards. All the big, heavy stuff will be left at home.
The arrangement seems to suit my holiday photography these days.
Happy snapping

I considered the G5x, which has the same specs as the G7x but adds a VF, but it's enough of a bump up in size to make it non-pocketable. I have a very small belt case for the G5x which fits nicely under a shirt or light jacket. Plus the G5x is a couple hundred more $$. It was close enough in size to my SL1 that it just didn't make sense to buy.

Well this picture gives me hope for 2 things.

1 - My bulldog is now recovering from ACL surgery, so I'm hoping he'll be back to running like this soon!
2 - Here in CT we've had the weirdest freaking weather. So here's to anticipation of SNOW at some point this winter!

John, nice action shot of your bulldog. One of my shooting buddies has one much like yours. I'm surprised at how much he likes the snow.

I think that I'd put up with the EVF and slightly more bulk. I'd just hang it around my neck.

Thanks! Indeed my bulldog (Brembo) LOVES the snow, he goes crazy! It makes the world completely edible in his eyes.

A pal of mine, who bought the original Canon EOS M, has now treated himself to the M3 + EVF. The results he gets, using the M3 and a 35mm f/2 are astonishing for such a small, compact package. Including the EVF.

Something else to consider . . . hmmmm.
