If you are talking and you get inside the car, forget about the phone call, and besides that the self phone won't be recognized for a while. If you are talking and you decide to get out of the car, also forget about the phone call unless you wish to stay inside the car. There is one system I regret not getting, and it was the Active Cruise Control, why? because if you take a road trip, it is so much comfortable to drive with it. I mean, I took a drive with my dad's 7 Series, and it was a dream, we could talk and be relax. I never had to press the breaks or the gas, the car was basically driving itself, sorting the gas efficiency to the best performance. Now, with my car, it was the same old story. Don't get me wrong, I love to drive, but then there are like a million cops on the interstate, there is no pleasure on driving anymore.
Have you tried suggestions in this thread about getting CA to work without having to dance around?

The phone should have a setting to be able to transfer the call to the handset. It might work if you just turn off the bluetooth in the car. I haven't experimented with it to see what all the ways are to deal with transferring the call between handset and car speakers, but it can be done.

I would have liked to get the active cruise too, but that thing on the front of the car, just the one side, was really ugly (looked like a zit). It was also too expensive for how often I would use it. Instead I bought a nice set of 17 inch rims and tires for winter.

I never have issues with mine, it works great and I wouldnt own another car w/o it.

BTW- I discovered that if you have your cell phone in the same pocket as the CA key, it does cause interference.Once I moved the cell to the other pocket...it worked perfectly.

Best reason to get comfort access...you are already paying AT LEAST $35,000 for your car...why not spend and extra $500 for an option nobody complains about having. This isn't like iDrive, about which half of the people who try it hate it and avoid it, while others just say they get used to it. CA really is convenient!

I have never, not a single time put the key in the 'ignition' in my car. Not that I am against it, since it ain't exactly hard to do, but I just haven't felt the need to pull it out of my pocket. I can count the number of times on one hand that I have even used the remote to unlock/lock the car. Even at the trunk I don't even have to put my golf bag down after embarrassing myself at the driving range! I just grab the trunk handle and slip the bag in...then hop in the car and pretend I wasn't there...haha!

This may be one of those little features that many overlook. However, most really will regret it once they see it in action. I know I would have regretted it. I just wish my house had this feature. Even if I don't have to touch the keys when I get out of the car, I still have to pull them out to open the house up, which almost seems annoying! Maybe I should get those fingerprint readers for the door locks on the house and for the garage.

You do have to put it in the ignition when you wash the car, otherwise everytime you rinse, the handle it locks/unlocks the doors

Just leave it on the seat

When I wash mine I just unlock the car and put the key on the patio table...that way it is too far away to let the car repeatedly lock and unlock itself.

If you're afraid of being locked out, alternatively you can remove the physical key from the keyfob and pocket that, then do what you wish the fob (on the seat, in the ignition). If you do get locked out (which shouldn't happen), you can unlock the driver's door manually.

No need to take the second fob.

I do that too -- as long as the fob is at least a few feet away, no problems.

You cant get locked out...its just a place to store it. You can put the key anywhere...just dont leave it in your pocket while washing.

I understand that, which is why I said "which shouldn't happen".

It's just that drkeng was talking about taking the second fob, presumably because s/he fears getting locked out while washing the car at a self-serve car wash if s/he leaves the fob in the car.

My point is that if one can't overcome that fear of getting locked out, there is no need to remember to take the second fob as you can gain entry using the physical key. It's easier to rememeber to take that key out when at the wash vs. remembering to take the second fob while still at home.

yes, taking the second fob is not a good idea.

fyi, you also have a third emergency key, which you could leave hidden in the car.

Various posts on this forum indicate that this practice was discontinued for MY07 e90's and was never the case for the e92.

On delivery I only received two fobs, each with an integrated key.

May be different for the X5.

sorry, yes I have the X5 and it came w/ three. The 3rd is a plastic key inside a hollow fob. It stores in a secret spot inside the X and can be used like a regular key or insert the entire fob into the dash.

^^ the 2006 E90 models have this, too. As PiperD said, this apparently is no longer the case for the E9x.
