There are a variety of different remaps available, some bespoke to your own needs, but usually you choose between 'performance' or 'economy'.

Performance obviously squeezes the most out of your engine and 'usually' give a couple more AVERAGE mpg. If you use the extra performance i.e. drive hard, then your mpg will drop to below what you averaged before. Your engine is obviously working harder than before and therefore uses more fuel.

Economy gears the engine up towards higher mpg and not bhp. I doubt the bhp actually drops however it just makes the engine more efficient. Give it beans and it'll probably return what it used to pre-map (?) however drive sensibly and you'll get higher mpg.

Evoglynn

nice hear from a fellow manual appreciator...

You'll be lucky to find a used manual 335i, very very rare. I had to buy a new one as there wasn't a single manual to test drive on the BMW used website for 4 months!!! Saloon over coupe anyday, those 335i saloons are bad boys.

Very few of the lounge lizards who buy 335i's can be bothered with the inconvenience of changing gear whilst twitter-booking on a blackberry or whatever it is they do all day.

Mine gets 25mpg long term average on town / mway / A road, not hanging about either. Thats 300 miles on a tank.

Those who talk about 'constantly' stopping for fuel are living in an oily dream world. even after 300 miles (3 to 6 hours min) you'll need to stop for a pee / drink / eat / stretch etc, just get some fuel too, hardly 'constantly'

I usually stop every couple of hours, so fuel every other or 3rd stop is fine by me.

335i defo.

Tourers are for dads.

Saloons are for people with friends

Coupes are for neither.

Did have a saloon, now I'm a dad I had to get a tourer..

Coupe has 4 seats still, just 2 doors missing for those having their mid life crisis and like to imagine they have a sports car...

You've hardly mentioned the 330i (you've only driven an auto version; try a manual), surely more fitting to your circumstances i.e. if mpg is an issue.

If however you JUST WANT a 335 (like I did in fairness) you just need to jump at it and damn the costs; both are going to cost a shed load more than a 120d. If you remap it and still drive 'inefficiently' all the talk of mpg goes out of the window anyway. A remap will only improve mpg if driven 'efficiently'.
Well when I started looking, I wanted a 330i to be honest. Then after driving it, I found it just hard work and didn't get out of it that excited. I enjoyed the 335d much more, mainly cos of the grunt. I also thought it sound ok for a derv.

If I got I 330d, I would see a 335 and think.......damn!! Not that there is anything wrong with a 330i/d.

Evo, I do a lot of town driving, stop start A roads etc and hardly any motorway driving and I am only getting 25 - 30 mpg at best in my D, gods knows what I would be getting in a petrol ???! All I know is that it could only be worse.
Thats interesting mate. Me misses thinks I should get the 335i as she knows I love to hear a car rev and moan like mad about mine. Even though down the twisty stuff mine is awesome, so much fun (help from Eibach, Brembo and Evolve) but no real drama.

After the test drive, I was going on about the D but the first thing she said about the 335d was, "you will only end up moaning that it it not exciting, no matter how fast". But let me say she will be the first to bloody moan when I am spending a small fortune on petrol haha

I know this will sound very bias but its not intended to be, but you don’t see many 335i ‘s on the road. You could almost go as far as saying they are rare. BMW Mag put them down as a better looker than the coupe

I see a Le Mans blue 335d saloon with privacy glass on the way to work each day,

Best looker in the range I reckon. Black would be a close 2nd.

I have never been a massive fan of the blue, but at Cooper in Chelmsford there is a 320i saloon with the new performance kit on and wheels.

Looks awesome
