IME, there's almost no drawback to using the FE 1.4x teleconverter on either the a8 or a7RIII, with the FE 100-400mm GM attached. Subbing the 2.0x for the 1.4x on the a7RIII yields some stunning results, but then fails to AF precisely in situations where the 1.4x has no issues at all. With the 2.0x, you've got 200-800mm, at good resolution, but you're at f/11!!! It works surprisingly well, but not near the keeper rate for BIF. Still, in good light, the results can be stunning: Hummer Enjoy Currant Nectar by David Stephens, on Flickr Note that DOF is really shallow, even at f/11, because I'm pretty near this hummer. Look at the flowers for focus. For static subjects, the AF works very, very well, with a keeper rate near 100% at f/11. As for the expected 400/f2.8, I'll need to see how heavy it is. I may just stay with my EF 500/f4. AF isn't ideal with the Canon lens, but it's the right weight and works very well as a 700mm, with the 1.4x TC-III attached.

https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/new-...t-lens-design/ I've been using the Sony 70-200MM f2.8 with the 1.4X with good results. Here is a hummingbird photo (it is hummingbird week isn't it?) from this past weekend while experimenting with HSS flash. I failed with HSS since I should have been at a higher shutter speed, but still a pleasant photo. |

I will be taking the A9 with the 100-400 to Sonoma Raceway this weekend for the Historic's to see how good I can pan with it. From my 1D4, 6 years ago:

So I went to the practice session at Sonoma Raceway today (which will always be Sears Point to me), and figured this would be an appropriate shot for this board. FWIW, both the RX10 and A9 worked very well for panning. Too dang good cuz I have like 2500 shot to cull.

I'm suspecting that the 500/f4 and 600/f4 are 2019 events. Oh, I wish that I had one now. The EF 500/f4 can be a battle for AF and the same is true with the 100-400mm plus 2.0x, which yields f/11. Even in great light, I still battle AF for BIF, compared to no problemo with the 100-400mm plus 1.4x or bare. I think that the 400/f2.8 is going to be too heavy for me to handhold, but we'll see. A nice 800/f5.6 should be fast.

I want a 500 f4 as well, but am also afraid of what they will want for it
For now I am pretty happy with the 560mm f8 option. Explored today. The distortion is atmosphere. Hot day and a ways off. Old Bull by lennycarl08, on Flickr |

I'll never figure out "Explore". It's never my best shot of the day. Still, I've had 82-images Explored, so I can't complain. Dve

Yeah I a have given up on that myself. I always think they pick the wrong one, but in the end, it gets people to look at my other stuff as well
