Other than the wood fence, that is a superb look. I like the rock and tree in there.

Great detail in the wings. Thanks for the back-story.

Ed, great shot of Burney Falls. Looks like there's plenty of water there.

Kevin, monster shot. You got there at a "good" time. (Not so good for home owners).

Thanks Dave. The falls are fed by an underground spring, so even at the height of summer and during a drought, they are pretty spectacular. What you don't see in the picture are the hordes of people there. The park gets so crowded during summer weekends, they have to block access to it. We spent about 20 minutes total there before leaving and heading south for Lassen. I plan to go back in the fall on a weekday.

Still, I took dozens of shots with the Sony, Fuji and Canon. I hope to have some more to post.

Photobomb!!

Hummingbird Photobomb by David Stephens, on Flickr

This handsome, male, house finch was posing for his finch-on-thistle portrait when a hummingbird blew by in the background at 20+ mph.

BTW, most of what I'm posting lately is handheld, with the Sony a9, the Sony 100-400mm G-master lens and the FE 2.0x teleconverter. That rig is amazing, particularly when you consider how light it is for an 800mm, full-frame rig.

As a travel camera, the 600mm effective range of the RX10 can certainly come in handy at times. This is the "Witches Cauldron" the 500 foot wide crater at the top of Wizard Island, the cone that rises out of Crater Lake in Oregon. Shot from a few miles away at a roadside viewpoint.

For contrast, I took this from the same spot as above with my Fuji.

r
Interesting comparison.

I've got a Sony RX-100, with a 1" sensor, that is very compact, but very capable. I now kick myself whenever it's not with me and I'm "forced" to take a cellphone picture.

Maybe some day I can meet up with Ed and learn more about bird and wildlife photography! I live in the south bay and Ed lives in the north bay, but we cover much of the same territory. My problem is that I work too much and usually only have the weekend for photo outings. Last week I had a few days off over the 4th, so I took my patient wife to Point Reyes for the day. The light house was still crowded, but long exposures made most of the crowd disappear! Ooops, now I gave away tomorrow's photo.

I escaped the heat for the 4th and went North. One more from Crater Lake. I thought this was the Fuji, but it turns out its another RX10 shot.

Looks like the RX10 makes a great travel camera - - - a crazy range for a relatively compact camera! Are these black & white images out of the camera, or are they post processed to black and white?

Just got back from a trip to Oregon. Took some snaps. Unfortunately, I don't have too much experience working with ND filters, so I forgot to lock in the ISO for this snap and it was very grainy.

Long exposures can be hit or miss. To improve the hit rate, I:
  1. Use in camera long exposure noise reduction
  2. Use a solid tripod or camera support (rock, log, table, etc) and a remote shutter release
  3. Start with no filter on
  4. Find the focus point and use auto focus
  5. Turn off Auto-focus (or just turn off focus on shutter release to start with or just manual focus)
  6. Use aperture priority mode and dial in the ISO and f/stop to what you want
  7. Go to full manual mode
  8. Set the shutter speed to bulb mode
  9. Use a smart phone App to calculate a new exposure time using the original metered shutter speed
  10. Put the filter on and time out your exposure using the App data
  11. Note that if you use in camera noise reduction, the camera will need to process the data for a time ~ equal to the exposure time
Have fun. If I haven't done long exposure in a while, I will practice a shot or two at home before leaving on a trip.

Point Reyes light house with the middle Farallon Islands on the horizon. Camera settings are: 25mm Zeiss Batis, f/5.6, ISO50, 118 sec exposure, ND10 filter. There where ~15 people milling around the light house during the exposure, most disappear from the image unless they are taking selfies or enjoying the view in one place for too long. In which case we now have the ghosts of the Point Reyes light house! This light house is located 300ft from the top of the cliff, and is still 300 ft above the sea level.
