Are you kidding me??? Some of my favorite drives are in my FWD '99 Corolla, shifting the auto tranny manually, running the motor to redline, going uphill passing lots of 'more powerful and better handling cars,' driven by younger people, who seem to be honorary members of the AARP race team.

Sure, my other cars do it seamlessly with ease, but nowhere near the smile level of doing it in the Corolla. I even considered replacing it with the new CTR. Nah, that wouldn't be quite the fun factor.

This would sell purely because it has a roundel on it... as others have said the CLA proves this is possible.

With that said 2 things:
1) Just bring a 2GC instead. I love my 135i but dispise the 2 doors. IMO the reason I love BMW is how it is a jack of all trades, and 2 doors dramatically limits is utility. I don't want the huge F30, I want a small 4 door bimmer with true driving dynamics. If it's FWD I highly doubt I would even look at it given the focus rs, golf r and better yet Civic type R exist.
2) I actually do think ///M could do something with a FWD based chassis. Not sure it's enough to beat the aforementioned cars, but I could see it being decent for FWD. Although I don't think I would ever buy one I don't think it would be garbage.

Just simply being rwd doesn't magically make a car special, something BMW seems to have completely forgotten with the entire, awful F Series. Hopefully the G gets closer to their roots, but I'm not holding my breath.
+1. I've owned five RWD 3-Series'. My FWD MINI Cooper S is more FUN to drive than any of them.

I hate this line. BMW has produced some incredible cars in its history and never had to resort to selling FWD cars and SUVs to make it possible. Please don't buy into this rhetoric, BMW is doing what it's doing because of greed, nothing more.
wat... The same exact thing was said about Porsche pre-Cayenne. Greed or not, it's been a winning strategy for them. Since going downmarket with the CLA, Mercedes-Benz has never had such a strong lineup of vehicles, and AMG is killing it.

Ummm, what?

"Hot hatches" do not sell well here. Never have. That's why we've never seen the 1 Series on these shores.

That's also why VW no longer offers the GTi in a 2-door. That's also why Subaru killed the 5-door WRX/STi. That's also why Mazda killed the 5-door Mazda3 AND the Mazdaspeed3. That's also why we don't get the Audi A1/S1 here, among several other 3-door or 5-door models. Shall I go on? 'Cause I can.

See my previous post. BMW exporting this car here would be the same heresy as M-B exporting the X-Class -- worse, IMHO.

Build it in Europe or the U.S.? Maybe. Build it in China or (in the case of the M-B) Argentina? Hay-ell nawww.
LIAR!!!!

I've seen a 1-series hatch (130i) in the US. It had Mexican plates and we were over 1k miles from Mexico.

hehe

Lack of interior space. It's why I'm the US the 1-series didn't sell well vs the FWD competition.

You think the majority of those 1000 dollar deposits are not from millennials? Also, 1000 dollars buys a few skateboards.

I don't have the numbers, and neither do you.

When living with their rents and actually working they should be able to afford something beyond maintaining their lavish lifestyle.

Because the next gen of the 1 series will be FWD, not RWD. Hardly a secret.

They should bring the M140i hatch instead. B58 engine and rear wheel based x-drive rather than this 4 cylinder front drive nonsense meant for the chinese market.

Mainly because of the Blue and White Roundel and not the wings...

I've had two minis in my life, 2006 and a 2011. Still to this day a vast majority of Americans have no idea Mini is owned by BMW.

It's all about the brand, nobody cares what they can get and for what. If it has a German badge they feel rich.

I've been to a few Cars and Coffees, the cockiness of the guys (and gals) driving the CLA is astonishing.
Same here buddy my mom has a 2003 Cooper 5 speed and later a 2010 Cooper S Mayfair and they were both great. Albeit the turbo mini was a bit of a pain but the Og one was a lot of fun as well. People just don't understand like you said and would rather buy a Base 320 xJive just so they can have a blue and white badge. CLA owner are historical.
The Cla 45 is a great all wheel drive car for everyday driving and I have both the CLA 45 and BMW m3 (e92)
Yes but optioned out it runs close to 70k and that is a complete rip off.
Actually 70k cheap! In Australia it's around $104,000 on the road
