I pro-actively replaced mine at 65k miles. When examining the original pump, it looked great. I was speaking with my tech, and he mentioned that the more you sit in stop and go traffic, the sooner these pumps fail, also obviously the hotter the climate, but if you do mostly freeway and not too much stop and go, the pumps last many more miles.

He mentioned when he opened up failed pumps, the majority of the failures are caused by a seal around the electronics failing and allowing coolant to flow over the circuit boards causing failure. My guess is they use a similar seal that's used for the oil filter housing, which also tend to start leaking around 50-60k miles.

63k right now on original waterpump and still alive... the car's only been tuned the last 10k, I would imagine the waterpump wears quicker when tuned..

89,563 left me in the middle of an intersection...... I just order all the parts from ecs tuning best deal I could find. I will be replacing it this weekend. I'll start a new thread with my experience of the process.

Water Pump

So, like I said earlier, my waterpump failure left me dead on the parkway. I got the car back yesterday. $1468 total. Replaced the thermostat too. I was out of warranty so I was f'd. Car was back to normal today on my way to work. Also had them perform the battery cable recall.

This makes a lot of sense in my case. I do 90% highway and 10% city. I am at 104k miles no issues with my WP as of yet.

yeah man I know Indeed. Knock on wood!!

I should start shopping around for my WP and thermostat too. I have a BMW tech friend which has helped me for years with other BMW cars I had in the past. I should call him and ask him to come and help me to change it. The only thing is that doing it in my garage will be hard and messy unless we do it in a shop.

My went out just before hitting 70K. I was going to work on the pump/tstat myself, got the parts online for $553 including shipping, but a indy shop nearby wanted only $240 for labor. I figured that was money well spent.

76k on my car. Water pump failed yesterday about 3 miles from home. Was able to limp and coast home. That is, let it cool. Go 1/4 mile, repeat. Note: since pump is electric, turning on heater doesn't help cool the engine........ Anyway, engine fine. Under CPO for another year. Pump will cost me $50. So far if you add the pump they have done $6500+ in recall and warranty. 2 fuel pumps, full set of new style injectors, plugs, crank sensor, O2 sensors, ....

Shop told me that these things fail all the time.

The water pump went out in my 08 135i at around 78,000 Miles. I was in another state and cost me about 800$ from a real sketchy shop, because BMW wanted 1600$$ lol...


*PS check your oil housing. If you have oil coming from it replace the seal. I found out that my seal was bad, and little pieces of rubber where messing up the water pump.

Add my 2009 to the list yesterday At dealer now and thankful for ext warranty. Dealer not doing t-stat at same time, thought it was a kit and standard practice to do both at same time?

WI car, Jan 09 build, with 54k miles, so not sure the duty cycle theory applies to this failure as it's colder here than in other parts of the country.

Put mine on the list. Just over 69k. My car is a 08 (11/07 build). Replaced under CPO and same deal as Fun w/N54. The dealer replaced the water pump but not the thermostat. SA said that the thermostat checked out ok so they could not replace it under CPO but I could pay to have it replaced.

Got 2E81 and 2E82 codes today on my 08 N54 E92.

Water pump died, fan was on full-time, car went limp mode and shutted down with stance status in the middle of Los Angeles freeway traffic jam ...

Indeed! I just did mine this morning with a jack and jack stands on the damn garage floor in 2 and a half hours.... I don't know what the hell that guy was doing...? But it was the wrong way!

Started losing coolant, about a reservoir a week for 4 weeks. Hot and cold pressure tests were fine, BMW told me to piss off. Then one morning all my coolant was under my car instead of in it... housing shattered I guess? CPO covered the replacement .

To the original poster.
I have turbo waste gate rattle from the front turbo.

You show a shot of the front turbo, can you remove it easily once you get there?
How long does it take you to remove the front?
is there a DIY or steps to follow?

My water pump was replaced too as it had a crack,
These cars are just nightmare to maintain,
People do preventative parts replacement, what a bunch of bull.
