Riley Elf

I think it was the summer of 1980 when I bought a ratted out, rust bucket Riley Elf - nowhere near the mint condition of the one in these photos. I was too young to hold a driving license. Nevertheless, I bought it for 50 Pounds from a local car dealer on my walk back from school and then I drove it home (about two miles up a country lane). I then proceeded to take it all apart and build a grass-track Mini Cooper wannabe - which sort of became an off-road Mini - no license required! A bit like a dirt bike with four wheels. I don't have any photos of that car either but something similar is shown below (in yellow). The Riley Elf begat the other once a bare shell had been located. Most of the mechanical bits were transplanted but not before the 998cc engine had a 731 profile cam installed and twin SU carbs added to it. The new shell was from an ex-rally Mini and had all sorts of floor bracing and strengthening. Though I must admit I connected up the hydrolastic fluid suspension incorrectly. Boy those were the days
.

.

.
An Example of a Grass-Track Mini. Except mine was red with a black roof - same as my E92 M3 now..

1968 Plymouth Belvedere. Slant 6, 2 door, purchased around 1984 maybe? It was a low mile trade in at the Chrysler dealer where my dad worked. Had some fun in it and "upgraded" to a 73 Beetle.

1973 Malibu Classic. Blue when it was built, but it was mostly rust by the time I got it in the misty days of the late '80's, and it didn't last long. But it was my first.

1980 Datsun 200SX

At age 17, my grandmother taught me how to drive a manual (my parents didn't know how), and then she gave me her car a year later. Still to this day, it's the single, most influential, and monumental gift I have ever received...because it was my first car, so it was the gift of unadulterated "freedom" (no more having to ask to borrow my parent's boring cars).

This cemented my love for cars and the art of driving.

Thanks again to my late grandmother, who forever shaped my life.

First car I had was a hand me down Toyota echo (2000 I'm thinking) which I drove all through college. It was my moms car, then mine, then my sister then my uncle got it and drove it up until maybe 5 or so years ago. I believe it was still running, just the AC didn't work anymore and it was pretty beat up, but that thing would just run. Above 60 mph you felt like you might catch some air though.

First big boy car I purchased myself was a 2004 VW Jetta GLS 1.8T. First car I purchased right after getting out of the echo and it was a manual. I had only practiced driving a manual like once or twice in a friends old bronco which you could slip into gear without really even pushing the clutch in. I recall I somehow managed to test drive it no problem, but the day I picked it up, on the way out of the dealer there was a small incline with a light at the top. I recall it took me many turns of the light to get through it, people were pissed and honking, didn't make it any easier.

Pics are not my actual cars, just same models and colors.

1979 Pontiac Trans Am. Worked two summers and after school to buy it.

Bored the cylinders, decked the block, milled the heads and put in a big cam with big tube headers. Didn't idle worth a damn but I loved that car.

When I first got my license I started driving my dad's old 1995 Audi A6. I'll find some pics of it but it was a gorgeous car and was one of very few C4 generation A6s with a five speed manual. My dad swapped out the stock seats for S6 seats. Don't remember how many miles it had when I started driving it, but at about 315k the transmission started having issues.

The first car I bought with my own money was a 2009 VW GTI. I bought it for $3800 when the trans in the A6 started having issues. It was a grey four door model with plaid interior and six speed manual. During my ownership I replaced the timing chain, water pump, clutch, throttle body, door panel fabric, walnut blasted the intake ports, and a lot of other smaller things, but despite its mileage it was a pretty solid and reliable car. Working on it was a pain though due to the very small engine bay.

I bought my 328i about two years later, and sold the GTI shortly thereafter. Got it for $6000 with 159k miles. 2011 coupe with the sport package, six speed manual, red leather, and H/K audio. So far I have replaced the water pump/thermostat, radiator/several coolant hoses, and a bunch of other minor things. Currently it is at 184k. I've come close to scooping up a 335i several times but there's not a lot else out there that's much of an improvement over an E90 series 328i imo without spending a lot more money.

First bike was a 2020 Yamaha R3, got it about eight months ago for $5000 with about 2100 miles on it. Now has just under 8000 on the odo. Also picked up three 1974 Honda CB750 projects a few months ago for $4500 combined. Should hopefully have the first one running within the next week or so.

'73 Datsun 510 wagon. In yellow. Bought it for $750 from my uncle just before my 16th birthday, but then I was the 'family chauffeur' when my dad wasn't home from work- my mom never got a driver's license due to vision issues.
